Didlake, Inc.

Didlake, Inc. Didlake creates and promotes opportunities that enrich the lives of people with disabilities.

Didlake strives to positively impact the lives of people with disabilities. Our mission is: “Creating and promoting opportunities that enrich the lives of people with disabilities. We are committed to eliminating barriers, so everyone can fully participate in all aspects of their community." Didlake is a provider of contract services and rehabilitative services. By succeeding at both, we offer new

, life-enriching opportunities for people with disabilities. Didlake reaches out to people with disabilities in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. We serve individuals with developmental disabilities as well as a wide variety of other disabilities such as autism, visual impairments, hearing impairments, mental illness, physical disabilities, substance abuse/addiction and traumatic brain injury. We have found that people—regardless of their abilities—tend to perform to the level of expectation that is set for them. At Didlake, we begin with high expectations for every person we serve—and when those expectations are met, we set the bar higher. It is an approach that works just as well for our company and staff as it does for the individuals with disabilities who we serve.

Congratulations to the nine interns who graduated from the Project SEARCH program at Naval Air Station Oceana (NAS Oceana) last week!

Project SEARCH provides students with disabilities, ages 18 to 21, the opportunity to develop workplace skills through 9- to 10-month internships. Since 2021, Didlake has partnered with NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBSchools), the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services, and the Virginia Department of Education - VDOE to deliver the program. NAS Oceana is currently the only naval installation to host a Project SEARCH program.

Since September, students have gained hands-on experience in departments across NAS Oceana, including the Commissary, Navy Exchange, Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Public Works, the Navy Inn, and the Child and Youth Program. Through these internships, participants have built valuable skills, gained real-world experience, and prepared for meaningful careers in their communities.

Congratulations to this year's graduates on reaching this important milestone.

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧’𝐬 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲: 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐝 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐔𝐕𝐀 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡

For Martin, every workday begins with purpose. As a helper in Facility Maintenance within Engineering at UVA Health, he starts his shift by organizing and cleaning the carpenter shop—setting the tone for a productive day.

Martin’s employment journey began with Project SEARCH at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center, where he interned with the same team he supports today. “I did this job in my internship, and they created a job for me because I did such a great job,” he says.

Before Project SEARCH, Martin gained hands-on experience roofing with his dad. But during his internship, his interests came into focus—especially painting and maintenance. Today, he continues building those skills, learning from coworkers like Kevin, who teaches him how to use different tools, and JC, who helps him refine his painting techniques.

A steady source of support throughout Martin’s journey has been his job coach, Theresa Polk, who has worked with him for two years. “To me, she is still basically my teacher,” Martin shares. “Theresa is always there for me no matter what. I feel safe with her.” With her regular check-ins, Martin continues to grow while gaining independence.

Theresa describes Martin as more self-aware, thoughtful, and compassionate, with a strong drive to succeed. He now mentors current interns, offering advice on how to succeed. His technical skills have expanded too; he’s learned to paint without tape and confidently use a variety of tools.

Outside of work, Martin brings the same care and responsibility to his personal life. He helps his parents, enjoys art and reading, and spends time with his siblings and dog.

One unforgettable moment came at the end of his job interview. Afterward, Theresa asked if he understood what had happened. “I finished the interview,” he replied. Smiling, she said, “No—you got the job.” Overwhelmed, Martin hugged her in gratitude.

Martin’s story is one of growth, support and opportunity—proof of what’s possible when determination meets the right environment. Today, he’s not just maintaining a workspace—he’s building a future.
