What a week at Northern Virginia Food Rescue! 🎉

This week, we rescued an incredible 45,638 pounds of surplus food and delivered it to 25 local nonprofits, pantries, churches, senior community centers, and schools throughout our community. None of this would be possible without the support of our amazing network of 38 food donors — from grocery stores to restaurants — and the dedication of 35 incredible volunteers who helped make these rescues happen.

Together, we also helped mitigate 51,575 metric tons of CO2 by redirecting perfectly good food away from landfills and into homes where it can nourish families and individuals in need. 🌎💚

Every rescued pallet, produce box, bakery item, and prepared meal represents more than just food — it represents community, sustainability, and hope.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our mission of reducing food waste and fighting food insecurity across Northern Virginia. We’re proud of what we accomplished together this week, and we’re just getting started!

We’re still laughing from last night’s Comedy for a Cause show at Hog Shack Bar-B-Q!😂🎤

Last night, everyone let their hair down, shared plenty of laughter, and came together to support Northern Virginia Food Rescue’s mission of fighting food waste and food insecurity throughout the Greater Prince William area.

A huge thank you to our wonderful host Hog Shack, the incredible comedians who kept the crowd laughing all night long, our amazing guests, and our generous sponsors: Loveless Porter Architects, Veteran Pest & Wildlife Services, Wewerka Construction Management / Wewerka Landscape, Morebrite Marketing, and Black Metal Mercantile. Your support made this event possible!

We also want to give a tremendous shout out to our Warehouse Manager, Ace Jackson, for helping bring this fantastic event together. From planning to ex*****on, Ace helped make the night one to remember.

Together, everyone helped raise over $1,200 in just one night to support our mission of rescuing surplus food and feeding our community. 💚

Be on the lookout for future events — you definitely won’t want to miss the next show!

We've got a sold out show. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Hog Shack Bar-B-Q in a few!

Today is World Hunger Day — a reminder that hunger is not a distant issue. It exists right here in our own communities, affecting families, children, seniors, and individuals every single day.

At Northern Virginia Food Rescue, our mission is simple: rescue good food, reduce waste, and feed people. Every pound of food we recover helps keep nutritious meals out of landfills and onto tables where they’re needed most. From fresh produce and dairy to pantry staples and prepared foods, we work with community partners, volunteers, farms, grocery stores, and organizations to fight both hunger and food waste at the same time.

But this mission is only possible because of community support.

Whether you volunteer your time, donate funds, host a food drive, become a community partner, or help spread awareness, you are making a direct impact in the fight against hunger.

Together, we can create a future where good food feeds people — not landfills.

A huge thank you to Harry & David at Tysons Corner Center for reaching out and sharing their surplus goodies as they close out their seasonal pop-up shop! From signature truffles and Moose Munch popcorn to jams and other treats, these generous donations are helping ensure that quality food and products continue to serve a purpose in our community rather than going to waste.

This donation beautifully aligns with Northern Virginia Food Rescue’s mission of recovering surplus items and redirecting them where they can make a meaningful impact. Too often, perfectly good products are discarded simply because of seasonal transitions or changing inventory needs. By choosing donation over disposal, partners like Harry & David help reduce unnecessary waste while supporting efforts to strengthen our community.

Every rescued item represents an opportunity to support local partners and keep usable resources out of landfills. We are grateful for businesses that recognize the value of sustainability and community stewardship.

Thank you, Harry & David, for helping us turn surplus into impact! 💚

What does a zero-waste model really mean? At Northern Virginia Food Rescue, we work hard to ensure that as little as possible ends up in the landfill. While our goal is always to get nutritious food into the hands of our community, sometimes we have excess food scraps that can still serve an important purpose.

That’s where our local farmers and animal sanctuaries come in. We partner with them to redirect food scraps for composting or as feed for livestock, creating another layer of impact from food that otherwise might go to waste.

Why does this matter? From an agricultural perspective, compost helps return valuable nutrients back into the soil, improving soil health, increasing water retention, and reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers. Food scraps used for livestock feed can also help reduce waste while supporting local farming operations. Instead of creating methane emissions in landfills, these materials continue contributing to a healthy and sustainable food system.

This is what a circular food system looks like: feeding people first, supporting agriculture second, and keeping usable resources out of landfills every step of the way.

Want to learn more about what we do? Are you a farmer looking for food scraps, or do you have extra crops you'd like to donate? Visit www.nova-fr.org, email us at [email protected], or give us a call at 703-822-5205!

What an incredible weekend of impact! We’re excited to share that Northern Virginia Food Rescue rescued 4,250 pounds of fresh produce from this past weekend’s Dale City Farmers Market. 🍅🥬🍎

This effort is only possible through collaboration, and we’re grateful for the amazing partnership between the Dale City Farmers Market, our dedicated volunteers, Interstate Movers, and Move For Hunger. Together, we’re ensuring that fresh, nutritious food reaches our community instead of going to waste.

Rescuing produce means more than diverting food from landfills — it means increasing access to healthy options for families throughout our region and making sure good food gets where it’s needed most.

So as this fresh produce makes its way out into the community, here’s your reminder: eat those leafy greens! 🥗💚
