Didlake, Inc. Didlake creates and promotes opportunities that enrich the lives of people with disabilities.

Didlake strives to positively impact the lives of people with disabilities. Our mission is: “Creating and promoting opportunities that enrich the lives of people with disabilities. We are committed to eliminating barriers, so everyone can fully participate in all aspects of their community." Didlake is a provider of contract services and rehabilitative services. By succeeding at both, we offer new, life-enriching opportunities for people with disabilities. Didlake reaches out to people with disabilities in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. We serve individuals with developmental disabilities as well as a wide variety of other disabilities such as autism, visual impairments, hearing impairments, mental illness, physical disabilities, substance abuse/addiction and traumatic brain injury. We have found that people—regardless of their abilities—tend to perform to the level of expectation that is set for them. At Didlake, we begin with high expectations for every person we serve—and when those expectations are met, we set the bar higher. It is an approach that works just as well for our company and staff as it does for the individuals with disabilities who we serve.

As we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we're revisiting some of our employment success stories.

One of those success stories is Zach, who is a valued member of the Environmental Services team at UVA Health and a participant in Didlake’s Employment Services Program. With the support of his Didlake job coach Theresa Polk, Employment Specialist III, Zach takes pride in keeping the hospital clean and organized. A typical day finds him sweeping hallways and stairwells, cleaning the basement, and organizing containers in storage rooms. “Cleaning and organizing” are Zach’s favorite parts of his job, and his attention to detail has made a meaningful impact on the department.

Zach’s journey to employment began a few years ago as an intern in the Project SEARCH Program. After graduating, his strong work ethic and organizational skills stood out, leading to a job match at UVA Health. Environmental Services recognized Zach’s potential, even carving out a position that plays to his strengths—and he has continued to exceed expectations ever since.

Theresa has worked with Zach for four years and has seen tremendous growth along the way. “Zach has become much more social with the people he works with at UVA Health,” she shares. She continues to support him by checking in regularly, gathering feedback from his supervisors, and assisting with any required training. One of her favorite moments happens nearly every visit: Zach greets her by name, excitedly recounts everything he accomplished that day, and proudly declares, “I worked hard all day, and I feel like a SUPERSTAR!” They finish with a high five—a moment Theresa says makes her day every time.

October 15 marks White Cane Safety Day, also known as Blind Americans Equality Day. The day recognizes the achievements and contributions of people who are blind or who have low vision while highlighting the importance of the white cane as a tool that supports safe, independent travel.

It also serves as a reminder that everyone shares responsibility for safety. Drivers should remain alert, understand the meaning of the white cane, and follow laws designed to protect pedestrians who use one.

Today and every day, let's support accessibility, inclusion, and the independence of people with disabilities.

As we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we're revisiting some of our employment success stories.

One of those success stories is Verali, a 2022 graduate of the Project SEARCH program who currently works at UVA Health. Not only is she hardworking and passionate about her job, but she has also gained confidence and become a mentor to current Project SEARCH students.

In observance of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, we're proud to highlight how we've helped thousands of people achieve employment success.

Employment is a process, and everyone's journey is unique. At Didlake, we are there every step of the way to answer your questions, address your concerns, and help you understand the resources that are available to you.

We provide a broad range of employment support services, including individual and group supported employment. What’s the difference between Individual Supported Employment (ISE) and Group Supported Employment (GSE)? Both provide support toward successful employment, but the support looks different:

• 𝐈𝐒𝐄: An Employment Specialist provides one-on-one support tailored to an individual in a supported employment position, and gradually fades support as the individual becomes more independent.

• GSE: Staff provide continuous support to a work crew of eight or fewer individuals.
