Common Ground is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization providing on-going peer support groups for children and teens grieving the death of a parent or sibling.

Following the death of a loved one often leaves families feeling overwhelmed with not only their grief, but the day to day activities in their lives. Often, it is difficult for the surviving parent to help their children deal with death, leaving the child to face their loss and pain alone. We provide support groups for children ages 6-18, grouped according to age, and also groups for the surviving parent/primary caregiver. Through the use of art, play, music, sand play, and talking, we give children the opportunity to share their grief stories and assist them in coping with their grief.

Thank you to the peer leaders SGES and all who contributed for collecting all the wonderful art supplies for our center. Art supplies are beloved and utilized in all of our groups to help kids and teens express hard feelings. We truly appreciate this kind gesture and we thank the 8th grade class for visiting us to learn more about what we do. We wish more local schools would have field trips such as this. We think it’s important for students to learn about what is in their community to support those in need. If your school would like to set up a visit, please contact us via email through our website.

Thank you to Liz Evanko of Haven Studios for the incredible mural that adorns the walls in our new teen art room. The inspiration stemmed from the teens themselves as they reflected on their coping, their inspiration, life as a grieving teen, their superhero and so much more. Their written words of wisdom are a permanent fixture on the walls, which we just love. We can’t wait for our teens to see their new room next week. Thank you again Liz for making this project come to life.

We are so proud of our incredible cast that put their heart and soul into delivering a powerhouse performance of, The Language of Loss play manasquanhighschool. This educational, dynamic and entertaining play can be offered at any NJ high school by contacting us. Grief education is now mandated in all NJ schools for grades 8-12. Why not teach about loss in an engaging and dynamic way?

Don’t forget to register for The Language of Loss on August 19th at the Manasquan High School auditorium. This educational play follows Lily as she navigates the complexities of returning to school after the loss of her mother. The evening will culminate with a live Q&A panel of bereaved teens who will share their experiences of loss. It’s an evening not to be missed. Pre-registration is required.

We certainly aren’t rushing away summer but we have been quite busy getting our new space ready to welcome our teens and young adults in September. The entire second floor of our new building is designated to them. It was exquisitely designed by none other than the amazing who transformed the space into a warm and welcoming space where grief can be contained, witnessed, explored and honored. New this year will be Wellness Wednesdays where teens and young adults will be able to sign up for modalities such as reiki, mindfulness, yoga, sound bowls and workshops such a “Food as Mood.” They will even have their very own art room and “Boom Boom Room.” We can’t wait for our former and new teens and young adults to experience their new space.

This exciting event is something we hope to see in every New Jersey high school as New Jersey prepares to implement grief education in grades 8-12. This special event is not to be missed and will culminate with a live Q&A of teens who have experienced the loss of their parent or sibling at such a young age. The laughs, love and community were abundant today at our 4th Camp Common Ground. The 100 degree heat did not seem to bother our campers too much. Much love and appreciation goes to our incredible volunteers and our Lead U team who made Goblies Throwable Paintballs the hit of the day, and maybe the year!! More great photos to come but for now, enjoy these.
