🌲 Forest health and wildfire risk reduction work is returning to the Mammoth Lakes area for the 2026 field season! 🔥
From May through the fall, crews will be actively conducting fuels reduction and forest restoration work across areas including Coldwater, Shady Rest, Mammoth Mountain (Juniper Bike Trail), Reds Meadow, Panorama Dome, and Earthquake Dome.
🌿 This work includes thinning overly dense forests, removing hazardous trees, reducing accumulated fuels, restoring meadow and aspen habitat, and improving overall forest resilience. These efforts are designed to help lower wildfire intensity near communities, improve forest health, and support more resilient landscapes over time.
⚠️ As implementation ramps up, you may notice increased activity including equipment, chainsaw use, noise, traffic delays, and temporary trail or area closures. While some short-term impacts are unavoidable, we are working closely with partners to maintain public access wherever possible and minimize disruptions throughout the season.
📍 Initial work will begin in May in areas including Coldwater and Shady Rest, with additional projects continuing throughout the summer and early fall.
📲 Closure information, trail impacts, and project updates will be shared on social media and on our website (link in bio!) as specific work progresses.
Thank you for your patience as crews carry out this important work across the Mammoth Lakes area.

🚫 Scenic Loop Closure Starting May 6 🚫

Heads up: both gates on the Scenic Loop will be closed for approximately 33 days beginning May 6 due to critical forest health work in the Inyo Craters area.

This isn’t just routine maintenance, this project is key to slowing the spread of bark beetle damage and reducing dangerous fuel buildup in a heavily used recreation area. Dead and dying trees here pose real risks to roads, trails, and nearby communities.

🌲 Why it matters:
• Protecting a 3,000-acre landscape from further beetle spread
• Reducing wildfire risk and falling tree hazards
• Improving safety along the popular Inyo Craters trail
• Treating 125+ acres (part of a 385-acre effort)

This work, supported by the California Deer Association, helps protect wildlife habitat, recreation access, and the greater Mammoth Lakes area.

Thanks for your patience while this important work gets done.
