As part of our Song and Wind music in the schools outreach program, the Eastern Sierra Symphony is proud to present the Eastern Sierra Symphony Brass Quintet in residence with the music students of Mammoth schools, and their teacher, Mr. Hammers. The quintet will spend two full days this coming Thursday and Friday, March 7 and 8, teaching, performing and coaching with the students of Mammoth Elementary, Middle and High schools. The quintet’s visit will culminate with their participation as adjudicators and clinicians at the students’ Solo and Ensemble Festival. Immediately following the festival, the Eastern Sierra Symphony Brass Quintet will present a brief concert in the All Purpose Room at Mammoth High School, which is open to the public completely free of charge. (Donations to support music education in the Mammoth schools will be gladly and gratefully accepted). The members of the quintet come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences, which serves to inform their performances and their teaching. The members are Gabriella Sá, horn, Imani Duhe and Michael Armstrong, trumpets, Rebecca Buringrud, trombone, and India Anderson, tuba. The Eastern Sierra Symphony thanks Mammoth Lakes Recreation Measure U, Stacy Schaubmayer and the Alpenhof Lodge, and Lou and Doug Stewart for their generous support of this event.

Exceptional Performances. Enriched Lives.

The Eastern Sierra Symphony is the oldest summer festival in Mammoth Lakes. When it started, it encompassed many different genres of music and even some other arts, but it has recently coalesced into a professional symphony orchestra festival. Starting in 2016, the Symphony was able to expand the orchestra fellowship program which brings talented pre-professional musicians up to Mammoth to sit side-by-side with the seasoned professionals. The combination of the youthful enthusiasm with the professional’s experience produced a feeling of electric excitement felt by all of the audience.

This program is not only unique to the Eastern Sierra, it is practically unique to the country. There is no other side-by-side program that we are aware of that keeps the professionals, the pre-professionals, and the students all working together for the entirety of the festival. In the summer of 2015, the youngest member of the orchestra was 9 years old, and the oldest was in his 70s. Creating this unique dynamic and learning experience has been a goal of the Sierra Summer Festival for several years, and it is gratifying and rewarding that SSF was able to create this quality learning experience and concert week.
