Obituary for Joseph Germano

June 19, 1925 - May 22, 2026

Joseph was born June 19, 1925, at 438 Center Avenue in Mamaroneck and passed away peacefully at home on Claflin Avenue in Mamaroneck

He attended local schools and graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1943.

May 1943 he joined the United States Marine Corps

After the war, he returned to Mamaroneck where he worked in the auto and truck repair business as the owner of Mamaroneck Garage until he retired at 70 years of age.

During that time, he was a Life Member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Posts 1156, the American Legion Post 90, the Elks Lodge # 1457, the Victoria society III, a Life Member of the Marine Corps League, Seagoing Marine Association and a lifelong parishioner of St. Vito Most Holy Trinity Church. He is also a member of a few senior golf associations and a more than 60-year member of Bonnie Briar Country Club. In 2016, the Board of Governors of Bonnie Briar voted to designate him as an honorary life member.

He donated land for the EMS building on Barry Avenue, was a Traffic Commissioner, and was a member of the Mamaroneck Public Library Board of Directors. He served as a volunteer on many committees over the years. Joe donated the 1869 School House “Bell” that was moved to the Post Road at Harbor Island.

MAY 30: MASS IN SELDOM OPEN MOST HOLY TRINITY CHURCH
St. Vito-Most Holy Trinity parish will celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity with a public Mass in rarely open Most Holy Trinity Church in Mamaroneck.
The Mass will be at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 30, in the c. 1885 church at 320 East Boston Post Road opposite the Mamaroneck Diner. The church is opened for only two Masses a year.
Afterward, those who attend are invited to a barbecue.

SEEKING: MAMARONECK HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOKS
The Mamaroneck Historical Society is looking to fill in missing years in its collection of Mamaroneck High School yearbooks, the Mahiscan.
The missing years are 1931, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1960, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997, 1998, and 2002. The collection covers 1921 to 2012, except for those 14 years.
Anyone who has any of those yearbooks and is willing to donate them to the society is invited to contact the society's archivist, Mike Tripicco. Email Mike at [email protected] or call him at 914-420-9310.

JUNE 5-6: WATCH ARTISTS PAINT OUTDOORS
Artists will create works outdoors at various Sound Shore locations as part of a Mamaroneck Artists Guild Local Artists-Local Scenes fundraiser. Artists will work on their artworks Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6. A reception with a silent auction of the works is June 6 from 5 to 7 p.m.

MAY 16: NATIONAL LANDMARK TO HOLD OPEN HOUSE: MAMARONECK UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
The historic Mamaroneck United Methodist Church, a National Landmark, will hold an open house on Saturday, May 16, from noon to 4 p.m.

The church, 546 E. Boston Post Road, dates back to the 1800s. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992 for its Carpenter Gothic Revival architecture.

APRIL 21: LOCAL ARTIST AND CHILDREN’S BOOK AUTHOR NEIL WALDMAN
The Mamaroneck Historical Society welcomes renowned local artist and author Neil Waldman to our members and friends gathering on Tuesday, April 21. The meeting is at 7 p.m at the Mamaroneck Woman’s Club, 504 Cortlandt Ave., Mamaroneck. All are welcome. Refreshments served.
Neil is a painter of fine art landscapes, working with oils, acrylics, and watercolors. His paintings and prints are included in many prestigious collections around the world.
Neil has written and illustrated more than 50 books, winning numerous awards. Although considered “children’s books,” each title tackles a serious topic, supported with in-depth information. His text encourages readers to understand and question themes in the book. Neil’s accompanying illustrations are powerful.
Neil tackles many historical themes in his books and paintings. At our gathering, Neil will share with us the creation of the book entitled, They Came from the Bronx: How the Buffalo Were Saved from Extinction. It is an amazing piece of local history.
In addition, Neil will display some of his artwork and share his efforts to support young students interested in pursuing art as a profession.
The book Neil will discuss is out of print. We were able to purchase a few gently used books available for purchase at the price we paid for them for those interested.

VIEW: MEN'S SOFTBALL LEAGUE 1976-80 SCRAPBOOKS
Bob Goetze of Village Paint Supply in Mamaroneck has donated to the Mamaroneck Historical Society through society Archivist Mike Tripicco four scrapbooks of newspaper articles, score sheets, and pictures of the Mamaroneck-Larchmont Men's Softball League for 1976-1980. Goetze was president during those years.
This is a wonderful history of some of Mamaroneck's still present sporting events. We thank Bobby for this invaluable collection for the archives.

MARCH 17: LARCHMONT PHOTO ARCHIVE HIGHLIGHTS
Photographs from the Larchmont Historical Society's archives will be featured at the Mamaroneck Historical Society's March members meeting.
The meeting is 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 17, at the Mamaroneck Woman's Club, 504 Cortlandt Avenue in Mamaroneck.
With the dissolution of the Larchmont Historical Society, the Mamaroneck society has been given access to the archives.

Because of the storm scheduled to hit the area this weekend, the 1816 Schoolhouse will be closed on Sunday. With strong winds and snow anticipated travel should be avoided. Please stay safe.
