Last month, eight Caruso Law students joined the Sudreau Global Justice Institute on a Prison Project in Malawi, where they worked alongside attorneys and judges on active cases.

Among the many meaningful moments, participants witnessed a historic event: Malawi’s first-ever formal plea agreement.

This milestone demonstrated that providing access to justice is not merely an aspirational goal but a tangible reality.

“When I first showed up, I didn’t make legal submissions. Just phone calls.”

87 people were arrested and held for four days without contacting their families. When one of our public defenders arrived, the first need wasn’t legal strategy. It was letting their families know they were alive.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is show up for someone in need.

When the leader of a country’s judiciary opens a training saying that everyone in the room, including himself, will benefit from the material, it sets the tone.

In Zambia, 54 judicial leaders received advanced training in commercial mediation, building on the foundation laid in 2025. 👏

But the real work begins when these tools are put into practice within their justice system.

In 2025 alone, Zambia had 1,540 cases referred to mediation compared to the 400 cases the previous year.

When cases move faster, justice becomes more accessible. 🇿🇲

“Although we are a small jurisdiction… we have serious [case] backlogs.”

The Hon. Chief Justice of Botswana shared this as he opened the ADR training earlier this month. In a country of just 2.5 million people, court delays have a real impact on individuals, businesses, and the justice system.

“That explains why we are gathered here today… to speed up the disposal of cases.”

In four days, 108 judges and lawyers were trained in ADR mechanisms!

✅Commercial Mediation: 49 participants
✅Plea Bargaining: 59 participants

We’re proud to support Botswana’s vision for a more efficient and effective justice system! 🇧🇼

“How has prayer impacted your work?”

That’s the question leaders from International Justice Mission (IJM) were asked during a luncheon at Pepperdine this week.

IJM’s Global Leadership Team, including founder/CEO Gary Haugen and senior executives across marketing, finance, human resources, programs, and more, spent time with a group of students from Pepperdine’s Seaver College, the Caruso School of Law, and the School of Public Policy.

Students asked thoughtful questions about career paths, leadership, and what it looks like to pursue justice in a professional context. But what stood out most were the conversations around prayer.

The IJM team shared how prayer shapes their work, not just in why they do it, but in how they sustain it.

It was a meaningful experience for everyone in the room.

When access to justice breaks down, the consequences are tangible.

Case backlogs grow, pretrial detention numbers increase, and prisons become overcrowded.

“This experience was one of the reasons I applied to Pepperdine Law. It is one of the most unique opportunities the school offers.” — Caden Benedict

Next week, Pepperdine Law students will travel to Malawi for SGJI’s Prison Project, marking the first expansion of the program beyond Uganda.

Rooted in Pepperdine’s belief in servant leadership, students will work alongside local partners to support those on pretrial detention.

Prison Projects challenge students academically and personally. They encounter real people, real systems, and real consequences. As they prepare to serve, we invite you to join us in praying for their wisdom and humility in the days ahead.

Criminal trials can take years to resolve.

In many justice systems, people wait years to see a judge.

Cases stack up. And backlogs grow.

Alternative Dispute Resolution offers a way to resolve cases without going to trial, allowing people to experience access to justice.

In December 2020, Esther* was arrested. Her case stalled for years because the prosecution repeatedly failed to present witnesses.

In 2024, she sought representation from an SGJI advocate. After reviewing the evidence, the advocate determined that Esther had been wrongfully accused and presented submissions on her behalf.

In April 2025, the court found her innocent.

After nearly four and a half years, she received justice.
