Members of the public are requested to avoid contact with Malibu Creek adjacent to the Tapia Water Reclamation Facility and at points downstream toward Rindge Dam until further notice.

An equipment malfunction on May 28 allowed between 500,000 to 1 million gallons of partially treated sewer water to spill into Malibu Creek near the Tapia plant in Malibu Canyon.

In its first phase, the plant will use membrane filtration, biological reactions, and ultraviolet light to treat up to 190,000 gallons of wastewater a day. That will produce up to 70 million gallons per year of recycled water that will replace drinking water that is used to irrigate City parks and Civic Center property landscaping.

The plant, which will produce recycled water for irrigating city parks, will begin construction this year.
