Vote in the 2026 Sierra Club Angeles Chapter Elections!

The annual Sierra Club Angeles Chapter elections began Tuesday October 1, and end Wednesday, November 13th. Active members of the West Los Angeles Group will be voting for At-large Positions on the Angeles Chapter Executive Committee, as well as Members of the Executive / Management Committee for the West Los Angeles Group.

The Sierra Club is unique among environmental organizations in that our leadership is elected by the membership. This democratic structure has allowed the Club to evolve and grow, and it's thanks to the dedicated service of so many that we are effective and thriving.

To vote online, visit sc.org/VoterPortal. You will be voting through Sierra Club’s membership system, Campfire. All members automatically have a Sierra Club account, even if they have never used Campfire.

If you have trouble logging in, check out the Angeles Chapter Election webpage for assistance!

Temescal Gateway Park has reopened, marking an important milestone in the recovery of Pacific Palisades following the Palisades Fire.

Visitors can once again enjoy popular routes including the Rivas Trail, Sunset Trail, and connections to Temescal Ridge Trail and Topanga State Park, as well as picnic areas and restored open space. Many of these trails were originally built by Sierra Club’s Santa Monica Mountains Task Force trail crew, led by the beloved Ron and Mary Ann Webster (pictured here), and you can visit the memorial bench named in their honor on the Rivas Trail.

Please note that the beloved Temescal Canyon Trail to the waterfall remains closed because fire damage has left the route unsafe. Officials ask visitors to respect all closures while restoration work continues, helping protect both public safety and the park’s ongoing recovery.

Following a careful, holistic, year-long evaluation, Sierra Club has voted to join the Santa Monica Great Park Coalition, a community-led organization working to transform the 192-acre Santa Monica Airport site when the airport closes in 2028.

Deliberations in the Sierra Club’s West Los Angeles Group focused on balancing two critical regional needs that are often viewed as competing priorities: Creating much-needed open space in one of the most park-poor parts of Los Angeles County while also supporting affordable housing, a critical conservation priority.

The resolution adopted by the Group reflects its conclusion that both objectives can and should be advanced together. The effort is strengthened by the leadership of longtime Sierra Club volunteer Frank Gruber within the coalition and the support of Santa Monica City Councilmember and Sierra Club volunteer Ellis Raskin.

Recent awards totaling $10.5 million from the State of California and Los Angeles County provide significant independent validation of the community’s vision for a Great Park that serves both environmental and social needs.

Recently, the San Fernando Valley Group of Sierra Club welcomed Max Malmquiest, Engagement Manager for National Audubon Society’s Saline Lake Program, for a fascinating presentation on his work and why saline lakes are such critical ecosystems.

Max focuses on protecting saline lakes for future generations of wildlife and people. Saline lakes include the Great Salt Lake in Utah, Mono Lake in California, and Laguna Mar Chiquita in Argentina. They are linked and critical to many ecosystems that we depend on.

Recommended reading 📚

The Trailcutter is a new novel from lifelong Angeleno and member of the Sierra Club's Santa Monica Mountains Task Force, Mike Robinson.

Set primarily in the Santa Monica Mountains, the story is part character study, eco-fiction, and mystery. It also touches on the history of the mountains themselves, as well as the hiking trails.

"The Trailcutter takes off and never lets go."
— Richard Dooling, National Book Award Finalist

We are honored to welcome Sierra Club West Los Angeles Group as an official supporting organization of the Santa Monica Great Park Coalition!

Their support followed a thoughtful and deliberate process that included dialogue, study, and consideration of how environmental stewardship, housing affordability, sustainability, mobility, and public open space can work together in Santa Monica.

After reviewing Santa Monica’s housing commitments, environmental leadership, transportation investments, and longstanding shortage of parkland, Sierra Club concluded that creating a Great Park at the airport site is compatible with those goals and represents a meaningful expansion of public green space in a park-poor city.

The Sierra Club’s decision to join the coalition is both deeply significant and tremendously energizing given the environmental leadership and values the organization has represented for generations.

We are grateful to welcome Sierra Club’s partnership as we continue building momentum toward Santa Monica’s Great Park.
