North Shore Hispanic Association Local, national and global events require greater understanding and acceptance of cultures and ideas different from our own.

The NSHA is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to strengthen a thriving Hispanic community in the North Shore area through cultural awareness, educational activities and community involvement. The goal is to enhance and uplift the entire North Shore community by identifying that which makes us the same while celebrating the unique gifts and contributions the Hispanic and other cultures each

contribute to the whole community. This is the uniqueness of America and the source of its strength and endurance.

NSHA Continuous Learning Scholarship will award scholarships to academically qualified, graduating high school seniors. The student must be a resident of Malden, MA and accepted at a four-year university, college, or other Certificate Program.
The scholarship, of $500, will be awarded based on academic standing and financial need to 3 students.

Application deadline is May 15, 2026.

As we continue to highlight our honorees, do not forget to purchase tickets! You can also buy at the door!

Karen Colón Hayes is a City Councilor-At-Large in Malden; she is the first Puerto Rican to hold this position! Karen has over 25 years in leadership and Director level positions including Psychiatry Research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Director of Human Services and Community Outreach for the City of Malden.
Karen is a passionate advocate dedicated to uplifting marginalized communities and championing inclusivity. Her father, Fernando Colón was born and raised in Luquillo, Puerto Rico and instilled in his children, a deep appreciation for their cultural heritage and the importance of representation. Her upbringing emphasized the value of diversity and the necessity of fighting for social justice, shaping her into a fierce advocate for those whose voices are often unheard.
Karen has successfully led numerous coalitions that unite people for grassroots mobilization. She is proud to have co-chaired Malden’s Promise which reduced the Malden High School drop out rate, Malden Neighbor’s Helping Neighbors who assisted Malden residents during the pandemic, co-organized immigration and know your rights panels and was an essential part of getting the Malden Warming Center up and running. These are causes Karen cares deeply about and she is authentic in any space she holds.
She sits on various boards, including the Metro North Housing Corp which develops and manages affordable housing, a founding member of the North Shore Hispanic Association, MaldenCORE (Community Organizing for Racial Equity), Friends of Oak Grove, Inc. (FOOGI), and the Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA) ensuring that everyone has safe and easy access to nature and a healthy environment.
She believes that true progress is achieved when everyone, regardless of their background, has a seat at the table. This includes mentoring our youth and inspiring our next generation to continue the fight for equity and justice. She is most proud of working with core stakeholders and city councillors to establish the first Malden Youth Council.
When Karen is not in the community, she is spending time with her family, who she cherishes. Her husband Patrick, daughters Maya, Kit and Noelle, their dog Shiloh and cat BMO.
Awards and Achievements: Massachusetts Latinx Trailblazer Award, Massachusetts Unsung Heroine Award, ABCD BOSTON Community Hero Award, North Shore Black Women’s Association MLK Community Leader Award, Cambridge Health Alliance Community Advocate Award, YWCA “Women of Distinction” Award and Triangle, Inc. We are continuing to highlight our honorees!

Juan Aurelio Lopez has been a public servant for more than three decades, serving in both the executive and legislative branches of the Municipal Government of Boston. In the executive branch he worked with Mayors beginning with Mayor White up until Mayor Wu. He was a Field Representative and Service Coordinator for the Jamaica Plain and Mission Hill Little City Hall, Senior Hearing Officer at the Rent Equity Board, and as the Mayor’s Hispanic Liaison. In the legislative branch, he has served as Liaison to Legislative Committees, Budget Analyst, and is currently serving as the Research and Policy Director for the Boston City Council.
Juan is engaged in community and civic activities, serving on various boards including the Boston Children’s Hospital Advisory Board, ETHOS Boston Elder Services, Latinos Contra Lupus, and Tu Hispanidad. He is the Executive Producer and Host of “Política Entre Amigos” Television Show on WCEATV and has served three terms as the National Vice-President for the Northeast of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), the largest and oldest Hispanic Organization in the United States.
Juan is the proud father of two daughters and three sons and grandfather to seven granddaughters and 4 grandsons.
