Excited to share a recent publication from a collaborative effort with University of Hawai'i at Manoa, NOAA's Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. It is a culmination of 5 years of acoustic monitoring work off Maui and is the dissertation work of Anke Kügler. Check it out!

Following reports of unusually low whale numbers that began in 2015–16, UH researchers examined song chorusing recorded at six sites off Maui.

For people who love whales, a high point of this winter’s breeding and birthing season for migratory North Pacific humpback whales in Hawaii was a surge of 134% in whale sightings by volunteers in January’s one-day Great Whale Count on Maui, compared with January 2019.
