When you’re the definition of A Very Good Boy while your tiny human practices reading skills in a horse anatomy lesson, and she gives you the extra grace of not putting the labels on your actual ears or actual muzzle for comfort. Close enough is certainly good enough.

The fog has set in and we’re in for another wet night in Makawao, but all is well at the barn. Take care, Maui ‘ohana.

We love this time of year! It’s Winterim Week, a time when smart young people step beyond the highschool classroom and into meaningful, real-world learning in their communities.

This week we hosted Greta, a freshman doing an Internship in Equine Assisted Services at Haku Baldwin Center.

Her experience centered on foundational concepts in EAS — equine science, ethical equine care, horsemanship skills, training and lesson-readiness preparation, and equine welfare and management within a structured, multidisciplinary equestrian program environment. Greta assisted with health checks, worked through daily barn and program operations, met and cared for each one of our program horses, and experienced unexpected vet and farrier visits — the real-life moments that cannot be scripted but are part of life with horses.

The photo captures one of those moments. Sometimes real learning starts with, “Wait… we’re doing what?” Yes, it's re**al temperature time.

We are always excited to work with young people who want to see what this field actually looks like, and we're thrilled to have Greta as part of our HBC 'ohana.

There is something special and grounding about taking your horse with you as you move through the little tasks of the day, like setting up or breaking down the arena. It is not just a warmup and it is not just about efficiency. It is about inviting them into the rhythm of what you are doing and giving them space to look, breathe, and take things in.

Horses learn a lot in those in-between moments. When they explore beside you and realize that nothing needs to be rushed, they grow into the kind of partners who think, "I can go anywhere." Patience, trust, and curiosity are built long before the lesson starts, in the simple act of doing life together.

Cisco loves investigating arena props ... and he's a really good sport!

Today, we are thankful for our volunteers who give their time with open hearts — rain or shine — the families who place their trust in our programs, the supporters who believe in our mission, and the horses who carry the work with us every day.

It takes care, patience, and many hands to create a space where others can learn and feel supported. This season reminds us how fortunate we are to be part of an incredible team and a community that shows up — not just once a year, but all year long.

From all of us at Haku Baldwin Center, we wish you a peaceful Thanksgiving.

After a long, hot summer of crunchy grass and dust clouds, it looks like mud season has officially arrived. One good rain turned into several and our pastures went from beige to bright green almost overnight.
We are grateful for this rain — and also grateful for rubber boots and raincoats, sunshiny breaks in the rain clouds, and horses and humans who know how to navigate the driest path possible. An important life skill!
