Four years in the making...these two mana wahines have dedicated their lives to creating safe pathways out of living houseless. Hear their challenges; knowing we have the capacity to remove all of these barriers. May this historic contested case hearing be the path forward to instruct new policies and procedures. Deep bow. We are extremely hopeful the county will honor due process.

Watching hurricane rip through Florida & other states. Stop blaming people living houseless. Restructure the systems so people remain safe for as long as needed. It going to take everyone, not just those affected. NOW.

Hawai‘i Appleseed is looking to recruit for interviews individuals who have received citations for minor traffic violations, such as:
• Jaywalking;
• Parking violations;
• Equipment violations (e.g., broken tail lights, tinted windows);
• Administrative violations (e.g., expired license); and
• Minor moving violations (e.g., failure to signal when changing lanes in light traffic).

Our goal is to gain a more nuanced understanding of their experiences, including the emotional, social, and economic impacts of traffic citations.

The interviews will be conducted one-on-one, either virtually or in-person at our office downtown, depending on the interviewee’s preference. Each interview will last between 30 minutes to one hour. Participants will receive a Visa gift card to compensate for their time and insights.

If you know individuals who might be interested in participating, please feel free to share this opportunity with them. If you or someone you know is interested in participating, reach out to Abbey Seitz, our Director of Transportation Equity, directly at [email protected].

Mahalo in advance for your support. Your assistance is invaluable in helping us gather insights that could inform future traffic enforcement policies and practices.

Please do not turn away from the difficulties anyone in tthis community is experiencing. We must meet eye to eye, heart to heart to move through difficulty and to grow. Sometimes it just takes a moment to shift despair into hope. everyday.

If you’re open tonight (Sat Aug 10) follow the primary election coverage on Maui’s own Akakū. Starting at 7pm-11pm. will be a guest speaker begining sometime after 9pm when the excitement starts to rise. I’ve opted to bring my jammies and floss, since I’m usually in bed by 9pm 😂. AARP is real.

I watch world news in many venues. This kinda scene was always something far away. And yet, it is right here in Maui with all the same issues. AND yet, I still hold out hope those in leads positions will move out of the way and let those experienced step up.
