We are collectively mourning the loss of a beloved community member, Alfred Kailihiwa of Kupuna Trappers, after he was attacked and killed while he was out taking care of community cats Thursday evening.

We are at a loss for words. We hope that his kindness and passion for helping others lives on through all the lives he has touched.

HANG IN THERE, GOOD CAT 💞 THE POSTER THAT EVERYONE NEEDS

Who doesn't like a motivational poster? Who doesn't need to be reminded to HANG IN THERE (especially these days?)

Did you, like me, always feel kind of bad for that little kitten hanging from a branch in the original poster from the 70s? I would look at that poster and think "Did they have a safety net? How long did you let him hang there to get the shot? Was the kitten scared? WHO WOULD DO THIS TO A KITTEN?"

So, since it is 2026, we've evolved the image and the message. This little tiger tabby has very kind, supportive hands protecting her. We want this image to be both motivational and calming. It should be a reminder to "hang in there" but also that we're all in this together. And that it's important to lend a helping hand to others (especially kittens,) too.

🥂🩷😻🤙The HAPPIEST of BIRTHDAYS to Good Cat Network's Executive Director Jennie Ben-Dayan! 🥂🩷😻🤙

She is our super-hero of all super-heroes, wearer of many hats, and one of the strongest, and most compassionate people we've ever met. We're so thankful to have her as part of our Good Cat team and SO HAPPY she was born!

And yeah - the past several months have been a little bit challenging to say the least: from navigating the management transition at Good Cat, the wild changes in our programs, staffing and financial resources to dealing the personal, family and health stuff that comes up in all of our lives (but especially Jennie) and just, well, all the crap happening in the world.

Speaking of that - for many of you, it might be the first you're hearing that Jennie is our Executive Director! Well, in short - Jennie came on board a few months ago, leaving Honi Honi Cats Maui, in which she is the founder, to her daughter Emily. Note that Honi Honi is still VERY MUCH Good Cat's partner in Operation Aloha Cat - in Honor of Louise H. Neuhoff. Honi Honi and Good Cat programs also work in concert with Surf Cat, where Jennie has another role: managing the volunteers and assisting in operations there. (In short, we're all working together.)

And so yeah, this woman has like a STACK of hats on right now 👒🎩🎓👒🎩 and WE ARE SO HAPPY SHE WAS BORN AND IS ON THE GOOD CAT TEAM!

More details on how our partnership started years ago, how we got to where we are now, and our vision for Good Cat and how all of these non profits work together in the future in a few blog posts at Good Cat Network News in the coming weeks. Jennie will have the opportunity to share her story, in her voice, and how she is navigating all that has come her way in the past year as well.

Just like the 70s version, there's a kitten courageously hanging from a tree branch, reminding you to hang in there when things get tough. Unlike the 70s version, this kitten is supported by loving hands.

We hope that our update to the poster provides a sense of calm, support AND motivation: not only that YOU have support from organizations like Good Cat Network, but a reminder offer support to those in need.

This photo was taken in 2023 by the talented Madelynne Lorraine Photography when she volunteered her time to help Good Cat Network and Honi Honi Cats Maui photographically commemorate our partnership in the Operation Aloha Cat program. Jennie and Emily brought some kittens over, we took group photos in my backyard, and at the last second, had a thought - "let's do one like the Hang in There poster!" So Jennie positioned this little kitten in my orange tree, and Maddy snapped the shot. This picture sat on my harddrive until now.

Three years later, it's probably the most fitting time for us all.

It's a beautiful thing when so many non profits get together to make magic happen ♥

Good Cat Network as well as Honi Honi Cats Maui, Surf Cat Ranch and Mel and Mollie of Olalla Farm Animal Sanctuary & Rescue all played a compassionate role in Charlie's story.

Charlie was volunteer Marty-Jean Bender's kitty. We met Marty-Jean when she was looking to adopt a kitty back in 2022, and wasn't able to visit rescues due to Covid restrictions. At the time, we set her up with a couple of senior kitties who needed a new home. When those kitties passed, Honi Honi set her up with Charlie - a goofball of a kitty who would bring back gifts of neighbor's slippers, socks, and other things he'd find in the neighborhood. He lived a happy life with Marty-Jean until her unexpected passing in the fall last year.

Marty-Jean's friend reached out to us about finding a new home for Charlie. Honi Honi stepped back in and with the help of Surf Cat, they got him ready for adoption.

The ladies at Olalla Farm Animal Sanctuary & Rescue were here on Maui voluteering at our Have A Nice Spay clinic and volunteered to fly home with him back to Washington State to find a home.

When the world seems dark, think of all the love and impact we're capable of when we get together ♥😻♥

A hui hou, sweet Charlie!

Sweet Charlie is off to a trial adoption in a new forever home in Washington state.

He is a beloved boy who lost his mom a few months ago. The team at Surf Cat Ranch Maui Kokuakats worked with Honi Honi to give Charlie extra love and attention to help heal his broken heart. And now he’s off to his next beautiful adventure.

Thank you to Mel and Mollie, our new friends, for taking him off to Washington with them and helping to find him a new home and to Good Cat Network for funding his flight and health and rabies certificates.

He is so lucky to have had 4 separate rescues involved in his story! So many people who love him.

Can’t wait to hear how it all goes!

🩷It's my birthday!🩷 It's a little awkward when you run the social media account and you have to make posts about yourself but you know what? I am feeling less and less awkward about it. I have decided that being 43 means no shame. The non-profit I founded needs money and birthdays tend to be a good day to ask for donations, so here I go.

FUN FACT: the first article of clothing I ever wore was a cat shirt. Yep. The hospital I was born at was celebrating their 25th anniversary and to commemorate it, put all the newborns in a shirt with the hospital name and an illustration of a momma cat grooming her kitten. Plus a ball of yarn.

So, my husband took that shirt design and good cat network'ed it.

Want to dress as newborn me for whatever weird reason? Or do you just like the cute 80s illustration that I am assuming was some sort of clip-art chosen out of a catalog by some Brentwood Hospital exec sitting in a board room the same way you'd choose your latex balloon image at the drug store when buying balloons for a birthday party?

HAPPY EARTH DAY // REMEMBER: EVERY LITTLE ACT OF KINDNESS MAKES A DIFFERENCE 🌎🌺😺

So, we know we're not saving the world with flying cats to the continent or providing spay and neuter services...but we know that we are making a difference in the cats we help, the people that care for them and the fragile Maui ecosystem that we call home.

We've flown over a 1000 cats off island and provided over 1000 spay and neuter surgeries...and I am sure there's a calculator out there to tell you how many cats that would end up being now, but all that matters is WE know we're making a difference. We are doing our part - and encourage you to do your part, too!

Volunteer wherever your heart is. Be kind to all beings. Be grateful for this beautiful world and do your best to preserve it. We're all in this together.
