Happy ! Hairy laurel (Kalmia hirsuta) is blooming now across North Florida’s pine flatwoods. Its distinctive, fragrant blooms attract a variety of pollinators, especially bees.

DYK: This wildflower has a quite unique pollen release mechanism. Its anthers are held under tension within pocket-like pouches found on the petals. When an insect lands on the flower, the movement releases the tension, and the pollen is catapulted from the filament onto the insect.

Garden Spotlight: Bruce J. Host Northeast Branch Library

This month, we are featuring a thriving native plant garden supported by our Seeds of Knowledge Library Demonstration Garden Grant. The Babies Breath Circle of the Tallahassee Garden Club has worked hard to support pollinators and other wildlife at the Bruce J. Host Northeast Branch Library, and their efforts are paying off!

Join us on Wednesday, June 17 at 2pm for our webinar “The Florida Meadow — A Future of Ecological Enhancement” presented by UF/IFAS Research Associate Dr. Gage LaPierre. Register now at: https://www.flawildflowers.org/event/260617-webinar-the-florida-meadow/

Meadows are dynamic, human-created plant communities — graminoid- and forb-dominated landscapes that offer both ecological value and striking visual appeal. In this presentation, we’ll explore what makes meadows thrive in Florida’s unique environment, from the principles behind their design to the practicalities of installation and long-term management.

Happy ! Endangered Species Day edition:
Beach verbena (Glandularia maritima) is an endemic wildflower found primarily along Florida’s east coast. It is a state-listed endangered plant that has been heavily impacted by habitat destruction and invasive species. The good news is that Beach verbena is available in native nurseries and makes a great groundcover in coastal landscapes. It holds up well against the dry, low-nutrient sandy soils and salt spray. Learn more: https://www.flawildflowers.org/flower-friday-glandularia-maritima/

IMPORTANT: There are many non-native verbenas available; be sure to source Beach verbena from a reliable supplier and confirm the species. Verbena species may also hybridize, so it is important to plant the species found naturally in your area to help preserve the distinct genetic identities and ecological roles of these plants.

Photo: Beach verbena is growing in the town of Surfside’s Little Bay Park, supported by our Viva Florida Landscape Demonstration Garden Grant. Check it out: https://www.flawildflowers.org/garden-spotlight-little-bay-park/

Team Wildflower is hiring! We are seeking a motivated and mission-driven Program Coordinator to join our small, dedicated team. This role will take the lead on some of FWF’s most visible and community-rooted initiatives.

This is a full-time remote position; however, candidates must be permanent Florida residents, and those based in the greater Gainesville area are strongly preferred.

Wildflower Wisdom: "Be patient with yourself. Nothing in nature blooms all year." - Unknown

🪻Wildflowers are so special, in part, because their bloom time is fleeting. Gloriously ephemeral.

🤞If you look hard enough, you may get lucky to see swaths of carnivorous pitcher plants in 📍North Florida right now. They are truely magical this time of year.
