From the Vault 🗞️ This 1889 issue of The Eatonville Speaker tells the story of a community determined to create a place of its own.

In this issue, town founder Joseph E. Clark reflects on Eatonville's founding and acknowledges the important role Maitland residents like Louis Lawrence played in helping Black residents purchase land when they were unable to buy property in the neighboring city. The front page also invited new residents to join the growing town, promoting Eatonville as a thriving community and encouraging “actual settlers” to purchase lots and build homes.

Written in pencil across the top is the name “Geo. H. Packwood,” suggesting this copy may have once belonged to George Horatio Packwood, an early Maitland settler, citrus grower, and landowner who helped shape the community's development. Packwood planted orange groves near Lake Sybelia, filed one of Maitland's earliest town plats, and lent his name to Packwood Avenue—the street where the Art & History Museums of Maitland stands today.

📜 The Eatonville Speaker, 1889, from the Art & History Museums of Maitland collection can be seen in our Maitland History Museum’s permanent exhibition, “Maitland’s Attic”

“Adding a few details here and there, some trim and bells on the puppets to little symbols and knickknacks on the paintings. Secretly I’ve also been making books away from the studio so that I can keep making even when I’m away from the space. I’m going to miss this time when it ends.” says Channing Gray from Studio 12.

Our Studio Artists are in the ninth month of working in their studios for the year. Check out the progress they've made!

🎨 From the Vault: Did you know the Maitland Art Center’s iconic concrete reliefs weren’t always the soft, weathered tones we see today?

When J. André Smith created the campus in the 1930s, many of its sculpted reliefs, decorative panels, and architectural details were painted in vibrant colors. Historic photographs reveal floral door surrounds, carved figures, and symbolic motifs accented with rich blues, reds, greens, and golds that brought the Center’s Mayan Revival-inspired designs to life.

Over the decades, Florida’s intense sun, humidity, rain, and storms have taken their toll. While traces of pigment can still be found in some protected areas, much of the original color has faded away, leaving the concrete surfaces we know today.

These rare images from our archives offer a glimpse of the campus as visitors once experienced it—alive with color and carefully integrated art at every turn.
