A new chapter in the storied history of the Maitland Public Library is set to begin this spring with construction of a large new facility that will provide more space and modern amenities to better serve the community.

The City of Maitland will host an official groundbreaking ceremony at 9 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, in Quinn Strong Park, located at 345 S. Maitland Ave.

Join the Maitland City Council and city staff, representatives from the Maitland Public Library and Art & History Museums of Maitland, HBM Architects and Turner Construction for a short program, refreshments and more.

The new, two-story, 20,000-square-foot library will be constructed on the north side of Quinn Strong Park, which will be rebuilt. City Council members voted Monday night to approve a contract with Turner Construction to oversee the major project.

The new library is expected to be completed in about a year, replacing the existing library building nearby at 501 S. Maitland Ave.

A city-owned, vacant office building and the facility housing the Maitland Senior Center near the corner of Maitland Avenue and Packwood Avenue will be removed to make room for part of the new library campus. The city’s recreational programs for seniors will be relocated to other city facilities.

The city has not determined a future use of the existing library building once the new library is opened.

Maitland’s public library first started in 1896 when Clara Dommerich donated 360 books, which were initially placed in the home living room of a local teacher and then relocated to an empty storefront on Horatio Avenue. More books were donated by residents who spent their winters in Maitland.

In 1907 the Maitland Library Association was created to build a dedicated library facility, which opened later that year.

Despite expansions in 1959, 1972 and 1989, that building is short on space for many current library activities and has no extra property for additional building enlargements. A 2017 city study indicated that numerous essential construction improvements would reduce the building’s interior space.

In 2020, City Council members chose Quinn Strong Park as the best location for a new library positioned next to the existing library site as well as the Art & History Museums of Maitland.

In 2023, the city hosted four public meetings, followed by an online survey, to gather library ideas from residents. Different work groups offered input regarding architecture, rooms, seating, technology, services and other features desired for a new library. Library staff members also were interviewed.

HBM | Architects incorporated the data into a library plan and cost analysis. The City Council chose a mid-century modern architectural design that complements existing development from around Maitland.
