Happy Tails Rescue, Inc

Happy Tails Rescue, Inc Happy Tails Rescue,Inc. is a small nonprofit 501c3 K9 rescue ran by a group of hard working volunteers. We are located in the North Carolina area.

We do not have a shelter/facility but utilize foster homes to provide the care and safety of our rescues! ˜”*°•.˜”*°• All About HTRI •°*”˜.•°*”˜

We hope this post will answer a lot of your questions about Happy Tails and our process. If you have additional questions, please ask!

Who are we? HTRI is a foster based rescue based in the Catawba/Lincoln county area. We are a private, non-profit org

anization that is run completely by volunteers. That means that no one, not even our director, collects any funds from the rescue. This rule is 100% without exception. The upside is that it means our adoption fees and donations go right to helping local shelter dogs. Every penny counts, and every penny helps.

Where do we get our dogs from? We pull from local shelters in order to help dogs that are in need. Please note that we are not the same as a shelter. We do not take owner surrenders.

What are our adoption fees?

$300 general adoption fee

All fees are subject to change at the discretion of the Director. We base our fees on our average cost per dog. This includes spay/neuter, microchipping, heart worm test, age appropriate shots, and one months heart worm prevention. Also in the event the dog is heart worm positive we put them through the treatment. Your new family member will come with a welcome packet that includes their vet records and chipping information as well as new owner products such as harness, p**p scoop bags, toy and treats. In addition to our veterinary costs we also have daily upkeep expenses such as supplies, medications, and grooming. At times some of the items on this list may be donated to us which is always appreciated. Your fee helps up to cover our costs, plus allows us to help with medical cases as well, which can result in veterinary bills in the thousands just for one pup. Regardless of the amount spent on medical care for your new baby, their adoption fee will adhere to the above schedule.

What is the application process? HTRI uses the following guidelines when evaluating an application:

All pets must be spayed or neutered

All pets must be up to date on shots (rabies
and parvo/distemper)

All pets must be on, and kept on, heart worm prevention along with the required yearly test.

We generally do not adopt puppies out to homes that have children under 10 years of age, but this is at the discretion of our director. No adoptions to homes with children under 7.

Generally we do not adopt puppies/dogs under 2 years old to applicants who are older then 60 yrs of age. Final decision is at the discretion of the director.

Generally, dogs who are large and active will not be adopted out to apartment or condo situations, final decision is at the discretion of our director.

All pets living in the house must be listed on the application.

The person who is going to be legally responsible for the adopted dog must make the application in their own name.

We schedule meet and greets on approved applications. In the event that there is more than one approved application, (we do NOT use the first come first serve option)

We check all veterinary references, and processing can take time so please be patient with us. Our number one priority is making sure we adopt our babies to safe and loving forever homes.

Welcome handsome Boomer to rescue family. Boomer was found lost and alone, but thankfully a kind Good Samaritan took him in and made sure he was safe. Sadly, no one ever came to claim him, so now he’s hoping for a new family who will love him unconditionally and never let him go.

🐾✨ Destiny's Story ✨🐾

Two years ago, sweet Destiny was discarded like trash.
As a young puppy, she was dumped at a local landfill. The act was caught on camera, but unfortunately there wasn't enough evidence to identify or prosecute the person responsible. Left to survive on her own, Destiny spent the next two years scavenging for food among piles of garbage, facing the elements, predators, hunger, and loneliness.

Somehow, she endured.

During those years, Destiny became a mother at least twice. She did everything she could to protect and provide for her babies, despite having so little herself. This past winter, after a brutal snowstorm claimed some of her puppies, Destiny made a desperate and courageous decision. She carried the surviving pups to a nearby home, seeking help the only way she knew how.

That call for help changed everything.

Happy Tails Rescue took in her puppies and initially planned to spay Destiny and return her to the area, believing she was completely feral after years of surviving on her own. But during the overnight stay before her spay appointment, something remarkable happened.

We discovered that Destiny wasn't feral at all.

Underneath the fear was a dog who desperately wanted to be loved. A dog who had simply spent years learning that people weren't always safe. For the first time in a very long time, she was given a chance to rest, to trust, and to be cared for.

Today, Destiny is proving every day that healing is possible.
She is wonderful with the dogs and cats in her foster home. She absolutely adores her foster mom and has recently started climbing onto the couch on her own, quietly asking for affection and reassurance. Every tail wag, every gentle touch she accepts, every brave step she takes is a victory.

She still has a journey ahead of her. Destiny will need a patient family, a securely fenced yard, and people willing to move at her pace. But for those willing to give her that chance, the reward will be immeasurable.

Like so many dogs who spend years surviving on their own without veterinary care or heartworm prevention, Destiny tested positive for heartworms. This week, she bravely received her first heartworm treatment injection and still has two more scheduled in June.

Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially life threatening disease spread by mosquitoes. Treatment is lengthy, expensive, and requires strict activity restrictions, but it is absolutely worth it to give dogs like her the healthy future she deserves. Just another reminder of just how important monthly heartworm prevention is for pets.

Through it all, Destiny continues to show incredible resilience and trust. After everything she's endured, she's finally receiving the medical care, comfort, and love she has always deserved.

After surviving a landfill, raising puppies in impossible conditions, and spending years believing she was on her own, Destiny is finally learning what every dog deserves to know:
She is safe. She is loved. And she matters.

We are so proud of you, sweet girl. ❤️🐾

Please reach out if you’re interested in giving her a forever place in your home

When people think about rescue, they often picture the adoption photos, the happy endings, and the moment a dog finally finds their forever home. What they don’t always see are the incredible foster families who make those happy endings possible.

Our fosters are so much more than temporary homes. They open their hearts and homes, rearrange their schedules, lose sleep, drive countless miles, and pour endless love into dogs that aren’t even theirs all because they believe every dog deserves a chance.

This week alone reminded us just how fortunate we are to have such amazing fosters.

Katelyn, who lives more than 2½ hours away, drove sweet Libi to CARE for her surgery, only for unexpected equipment issues to cancel the procedure. Earlier that same morning, Jennifer had already taken Destiny for her first heartworm treatment at Animal Hospital North. Without hesitation, Jennifer then drove to Charlotte to pick up Libi before heading back to Hickory to get Destiny, who was frightened and struggling to stay calm away from her foster. She later met up with Katelyn so she wouldn’t have to make the entire 2½-hour drive back home alone.

And next week, Katelyn will do it all over again.

No complaints. No hesitation.

Because Libi is worth it. 🩷
Because Destiny is worth it. 🩷

And that’s what fostering is all about.
The stories don’t stop there. One of our incredible fosters is spending hours on the road helping sweet Ozzy find his forever family traveling from Gastonia to Hickory and then to Weaverville to meet potential adopters. Why? Because Ozzy is worth it too. 💙

And today, Daniell is at the vet with Andi and Fen as they receive heartworm treatment. She stepped up to foster them after their previous foster placement failed them, giving them the love, stability, and care they desperately needed.

This is what our fosters do every single day. They attend vet appointments, administer medications, comfort scared dogs, advocate for them, support the rescue, and love these animals as their own while preparing them for the families they’ve always deserved.

To every dedicated Happy Tails foster past, present, and future thank you. We see you. We appreciate you. And we could not do this without you.💜🐾

Update on sweet little Libi 💜
Sadly they were not able to complete her heart surgery yesterday due to equipment failure during the procedure. They first started with her right vessel, but it was too small for the catheter, so they moved to the left vessel. That vessel was large enough, and they were able to begin inserting the catheter. However, once they reached her heart and began injecting the contrast dye so they could locate the PDA and place the device, the X-ray machine suddenly shut down.
Unfortunately, IT was unable to assess the issue for several hours, and precious Libi had already been under anesthesia for nearly 2 hours, so the doctors made the difficult decision to abort the procedure.
She is now scheduled for open-heart surgery on Tuesday, May 26. Please continue sending all the good vibes, thoughts, and prayers her way as she prepares for the next step in this journey. 💕
