In mid June, after multiple practice hikes, backpacking treks, equipment training, and hard work, seven of Troop 89’s experienced Scouts set off for a Western States High Adventure Trek. Scouts were accompanied by four Troop 89 adult volunteers. This crew backpacked and hiked in the mountains, enjoyed a rodeo, swam in an ice-cold lake, whitewater rafted, fished, spotted wildlife and much more.

Each Scout started preparing for this trek years ago: Hiked close to home, learned to navigate, built stamina and honed backcountry equipment skills. Each time they practiced they gained more confidence.

Over the next few months, Troop 89’s dedicated Scout leadership team and adult volunteers will again offer similar fun learning opportunities for Scouts through monthly campouts and weekly troop meetings. We’ll plan for a fall hike/backpacking event and another one next spring.

Stats:
7 Troop 89 Scouts + 4 adults
5 states - Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota
11 days - backcountry/backpacking and front country camping.
2857 miles driven over 59 hours in 2 vans.

Yellowstone National Park
Grand Teton National Park
Theodore Roosevelt National Park
Black Hills National Forest
Bridger-Teton National Forest
Bighorn National Forest
Shoshone National Forest
Mount Rushmore National Memorial
Little Bighorn Battlefield National Memorial

It may be cold outside, but Troop 89 Scouts are busy signing up for a variety of upcoming "High Adventure" trips. Scouts will be winter camping soon in Ely, MN at BSA's Northern Tier's Okpik program. They're also signing up for 2023 Out Island adventures at BSA's Sea Base in the Florida Keys and a troop-planned Western States high adventure trip this summer.

Last night Scouts arrived at George H Crosby Manitou State Park and hiked to their backpacking campsite around Benson Lake. Scouts buddied up and helped each other set up tents and hang bear bags. Overnight temps were good, in the 40’s. Wake up at 7, start filtering water and cook breakfast. Scouts will finalize their hiking plan and route, designate leadership and hiking responsibilities. Plan to start hiking at 9. Throughout the day they’ll hike, work on Hiking MB, Backpacking MB and advancement requirements. Looking forward to a great day.

Troop 89’s annual ceremony for disposal of unserviceable flags is a dignified tribute to the Flag of the United States of America and to its symbolism.
