Does anyone have a copy of this book?

Shortly before her death Dr. Ruth Couch, SAU Class of 58 completed “The Noble Heritage of Harvey C. Couch School,” a history on this community school located in Calhoun, Ark. Dr. Couch had a great interest in preserving the history of community schools that have now been consolidated into larger districts. Dr. Couch passed away July 26, 2014.

FB memories-PT 2. ❤️ Margie and her cookbook.

I have a question 🙋‍♀️… A lady I’ve known for several years called me a few days ago. She was friends with Margie and Margaret Baker and was part of helping another lady write a self published book about the Calhoun School Days and Harvey C. Couch. She called me to ask if the Community Center’s historical collection had this book written by Ruth Couch? We do Not.

Does anyone know where the HCCS & the Calhoun Community Club can find a copy? I know it would have to be a copy someone has and the community center would love to borrow and make copies of its pages. Or better yet, if anyone has a copy willing to donate to the Calhoun Community Center Historical Collection.

I’m surprised the alumni did not get one when it was self published..

Would love any information how to find the book written by Ruth Couch.. Thank-You❣️

The name of the book by Dr. Ruth Couch - The Noble Heritage of Harvey C. Couch School in Calhoun, Arkansas.

Meet Amber 👇🏻 my 30 year old puppet. ❤️ She loves to entertain..

I’m just putting this out there. We will be having another Ole Time Christmas Open House in December.. With Vendors and more..

Trying to figure out - possibly, maybe adding something new & fun for kids & the family at Christmas Open House. 🤔

We have a real stage in the Harvey C. Couch/Calhoun Club Community Center that kids many moons ago performed plays for the community.

Well, believe it or not - I (Julie) am a trained puppeteer and own a very large collection of puppets, puppet stage, and several Christmas puppet productions.

Been awhile since I have put a production together. But, in my lifetime I have taught many children and adults to manipulate a puppet and have organized and produced puppet shows for community events, nursing homes and churches..

So, my question is - are there any kids, youth, and adults out there that would like to learn to be a puppeteer? Kids have to be 9 + years old.

The productions are recorded puppet trax musicals, and the only thing a puppeteer has to do is stand behind the curtain and know how to manipulate the puppet with the songs and recorded speaking parts. Must have a strong arm.

My best puppeteer’s I have trained, surprisingly are those shy souls. It’s amazing to watch a shy child come to life behind the curtain with a puppet.

It would take 10 committed volunteers to produce a Christmas Production.

3 scheduled classes to learn to manipulate a puppet. We would meet one day during the week for 3 weeks.

Then it would take 6-8 weeks - practice 1 day a week to pull off a fun, beautiful, reason for the season Christmas Production.

Something like this takes a lot of planning and practice. That’s why I’m bringing this up in June. 6 months to plan.

1st step would be to see if anyone is interested in becoming a puppeteer.. Would home schooling groups be interested?

Practice would be at the HCCS/Calhoun Community Club Center. Each class would take a hour and a 1/2 - one day a week.

Please let me know if you are interested or know a child, teenager or an adult who would like to be a part of a Puppet Christmas Production? Comment below.

If no interest- back to the drawing board, trying to bring fun things to the community center - in Calhoun.

We got a letter from S. Arkansas Heritage Museum and copies of pages from a book about Calhoun. ❤️

A Big Shout Out to Amy Staten McNeil - South Arkansas Heritage Museum.

Remember Flat Stanley and his adventures? He got to learn some fun history about Columbia County and S. Arkansas at the S. Arkansas Heritage Museum. Flat Stanley was blessed to learn so many fun historical facts, about our region of Arkansas.❤️

I highly recommend everyone visit the museum and I posted (pictures attached) information about how to get in contact with the museum, for their hours and contact needed for private tours. They offer group and school tours.

Information in pictures attached - Amy’s business card and the letter she sent with more fun history about Calhoun and Harvey C. Couch.

Amy sent copies of pages, from a book about Columbia County, written by, Nettie Hicks Killgore - published in 1947.

I’ve also attached to this post a few old photos of somethings Nettie was writing about in Calhoun. When the book was published, the High School that Harvey C. Couch helped get built in the Calhoun Community was still in operation.

Last Class in Calhoun was 1957 and the High School was barely 10 years old when the Magnolia School District made the community tear it down. Thankful and grateful the original 4 Room School House Harvey built for his childhood community in 1928 was saved. Today it is a community center and was established by the alumni, where so many childhood memories were made.

Nettie writes about how modern, high tech and how beautiful the high school was for its day.

The Arkansas Centennial Marker is mentioned and the 1st actual schoolhouse in Columbia County was mentioned and was located in Calhoun, built by the early pioneers. I attached a picture of the students who attended the Brownwood School - 1918 - located on Doc Booth’s property. Remember the Queen of the Homecoming - 1928? She was a Booth and was the oldest pioneer crowned for the celebration of the opening of the Harvey C. Couch School.

Enjoy the read and again, thank-you Amy. This will be added into the Calhoun Community Club historical collections for future generations.

Keeping history alive in Calhoun.

More workshop times this summer with Nancy Williams - Certified Herbalist - Wonderleaf Botanicals, LLC - El Dorado, AR - ESTD - 2025

05/27/2026

Our 1st Class in Session since 1955 was a great success and we all had such a great time learning about herbs and how we can learn to use God’s Garden in our own lives.

A big thank you, to our teacher and now mentor Nancy Williams a certified Herbalist - owner of Wonderful Botanicals, LLC - El Dorado, Arkansas.

We had a GREAT turnout and we loved what Nancy shared last night.
Her testimony of a true calling from God and how He put a desire in her ❤️ to help others discover God’s Garden and how He planted so many wonderful things for us to find healing, rest and a better healthier life through the things He scattered throughout our earth. God planted many helpful tools in His plants - He created. 🌿🌱🪴🍄‍🟫🌾🌺 For Us. ❤️

Nancy taught us how to make teas and tincture out of God’s Garden. And we made a tea blend out of God’s Garden last night, that helps calm and improve our digestion. It was so good.

Nancy passed around books and information on how we can all get started to learn how to discover God’s Garden in our own backyards.

We plan to continue this journey of classes. Stay tune.

I will be posting a FB post. Look for it. Nancy will be offering more workshops on Herbs this summer and I do plan to attend. The post will give you information about the place, dates and times.

If you attended our workshop last night, please comment below and let us know if you enjoyed. Thanks to everyone who came and participated in our 1st Class at the Harvey C. Couch School since 1955. More to come - stay tune as we continue to grow our Calhoun Club Community Center into a place of fun events, craft shows and classes for the families in Columbia County.
