Start a Food Business in Your Home Kitchen

Kentucky Innovation Station Learning Series

Madisonville, Ky. (July 6, 2022) – People love fresh-baked cookies and cakes right out of the oven, but selling homemade food from your home was illegal in Kentucky for anyone who did not own a farm. That changed in 2018 with the passage of Kentucky House Bill 263, supported by the Institute for Justice. The law allowed Kentucky residents to produce and sell many types of homemade foods without paying registration fees or worrying about sales limits. Kentucky House Bill 468, adopted in 2019, reversed some of the gains.

Madisonville Hopkins County Economic Development Corporation and the Madisonville Minority Economic Development Council have paired up to provide training and resources for those who are interested in starting a food business. This free workshop will be held on July 20th from 11AM - 1PM. Guest speaker, Lewis Ramsey, Home-Based Processor Coordinator with the Kentucky Food Safety Branch of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services will be leading the session. The workshop will talk you through the process of starting a food business from your home kitchen, Learning about Cottage Foods, Micro processing, local requirements, and more.

This event will be a great opportunity for you to learn what is required and get your business started. Registration is REQUIRED.
