We just filed an emergency petition asking the Wisconsin DNR to pause bear-dog training during declared heat, air-quality, and fire emergencies. Read it here:

🚨 EMERGENCY ACTION 🚨 Wildfires are burning across northern Minnesota. Smoke is blanketing Wisconsin. And right now, bears — including cubs — are still being run for miles by packs of hunting dogs in dangerous heat and hazardous air.
Black bears can't sweat. Their only defense against heat is shade, water, and rest — exactly what a hound chase takes away. This isn't tradition, it's cruelty with no license required and zero oversight.

We don't send letters and hope. We file, we fight, we get it done — and right now a generous donor is matching every gift up to $1,000 through Fidelity Charitable. Help us push this through 👉 speakforwildlife.org/donate

🚨 BREAKING: The Trump administration just gutted a core protection under the Endangered Species Act — quietly repealing the definition of "harm" that has stopped developers from destroying critical habitat for 53 years.Translation: they can now wipe out the food, shelter, and breeding grounds an endangered species needs to survive, and legally claim they never "harmed" it.

GLWA is fighting on every front — wolves, wildlife killing contests, bear hounds, wind energy habitat loss, and now a federal rollback that threatens it all. We're all-volunteer. We need you.

A wolf pack is a family. Built around a breeding pair and their pups, sometimes generations of them, raising the young together.
When a poacher kills one of that pair — quietly, in the woods, with no one watching — the family doesn't just lose a member. It loses the bond holding it together. Territory becomes vulnerable. Pups can starve or wander off alone. Research on Wisconsin's own wolves found poaching accounts for 39–45% of all wolf deaths here, and roughly half of that goes completely undetected. No collar signal. No carcass. No record.
And here's the part that should worry every one of us: that same research found that when the state loosens protections and opens the door to legal hunting, poaching doesn't go down — it goes up. Wolves that disappear without a trace rose 11–34% during those periods. Researchers call it "facilitated illegal killing." A green light for hunting is also a green light for hiding a body.
Right now, DNR's own Wolf Advisory Committee is drafting harvest zones and quotas for a hunt that's currently illegal — on a species the agency itself says is automatically protected under federal law. Before the legally required mortality report is even out.
A supporter is matching every gift up to $200 this week. Help us keep watching. 🐺
