Madison Children's Museum

Madison Children's Museum Madison Children's Museum is a community hub for children and families where play is serious business. Keep your eyes out to see what's new!
(2136)

Our exhibits are created just for our museum by an on-staff team of creatives, artisans, and child development experts! Madison Children's Museum is the area's premier destination for hands-on fun and learning for the whole family! We have various exhibit areas throughout the museum, including: the Rowland Rooftop Ramble, a four-season green roof with animals and gardens; the Wildernest, a global

village made with natural, local materials and designed for ages 5 and under; the Bakke Art Studio, where visitors can do a daily drop-in project and paint on windows; our newest exhibit From Coops to Cathedrals Nature, Childhood, and the Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright where kids can tinker, play, draw inspiration from nature, and explore just like the famous local architect did; and the DeAtley Community Concourse, a free-admission area with several exhibits and a pizza cafe. Our in-house team of artists and artisans designs, builds, and maintain the exhibits and features change continuously throughout the year. The museum also offers special programs and events daily; view our website calendar to plan your visit.

Dolly Parton embodied so much of what we believe in here at Madison Children's Museum.

She was a brilliant, prolific songwriter who spent her life bringing people together through music and inspiring them to find their own voices. She loved big wigs and sparkly outfits and being exactly who she wanted to be, and that same spirit made her a fierce advocate for kindness, empathy, and understanding across every kind of divide. She especially stood up for people who are too often pushed to the margins, including the LGBTQ community. Dolly believed that everyone deserves to be loved for who they are. That belief is at the heart of what we do here: we want every child and family who walks through our doors to feel welcome and safe.

She was also endlessly kind. Through her Imagination Library, Dolly mailed more than 300 million free books to children in five countries over thirty years. Here in Dane County, our friends at the Madison Reading Project carry that work forward as the official Literacy Champion of the program.

Madison Children's Museum is run by musicians, artists, inventors, dreamers, and—most importantly—people who love kids. Dolly was all of those things too, and she did it in six-inch heels. Her legacy of music, joy, and community will continue to inspire us for decades to come. 💜
