On Saturday, November 22, Capitol Water Trails hosted its final cleanup of the 2025 season with a productive workday along the Koshkonong Creek. The five-person volunteer crew gathered at Badger Farms before heading to their worksite on N. Jargo Road, near the bridge on the Glacial Drumlin State Trail.

The volunteer team represented a strong partnership among local conservation groups. Two members came from the Friends of the Koshkonong Creek, two from the Maunesha River Alliance, and Steve represented Capitol Water Trails. Together, they tackled one of the area’s most pressing issues: a large debris blockage that had accumulated near the bridge.

The clog, made up of several massive logs and layers of bark that fell a large cottonwood tree, had severely impeded the creek’s natural flow. The obstruction caused duckweed to flourish, led to the formation of a floating island, and forced excess water into surrounding fields. The crew worked diligently to clear the blockage and restore the creek’s flow with the help of a skidsteer. In addition, they removed invasive honeysuckle and buckthorn trees to promote the return of native vegetation.

With this successful cleanup, Capitol Water Trails officially concluded its scheduled events for 2025. However, organizers noted that additional workdays may be scheduled if weather conditions remain favorable.

Community members interested in future volunteer opportunities are encouraged to reach out by messaging Capitol Water Trails through their page. Every cleanup effort helps protect and restore local waterways—strengthening the natural beauty and ecological health of the region for years to come.

What a productive day!
Seven volunteers joined forces on May 31 for a cleanup on the Koshkonong Creek. The group that met at Badger Farms LLC consisted of four members fromTrails' the Friends of Koshkonong Creek, two from the Maunesha River Alliance, and Steve from Capitol Water Trails. While working on a section of land along the creek in the Deerfield area, they removed eight blockages with the aid of a skid steer during the almost four-hour cleanup.

The removal of the blockages opened up the creek and got the water flowing again. Capitol Water Trails will return to the Koshkonong Creek on July 19. Meet at Badger Farms at 9am if you are interested in helping.

Capitol Water Trails' next cleanup will be on the Maunesha River on June 14. CWT will be teaming up with the Maunesha River Alliance and meeting at the Four Corners in downtown Waterloo at 9am.

Capitol Water Trails joined forces with the Friends of Six Mile Creek on April 5 for a four-hour cleanup. The two groups met at the Castle Creek Conservancy off Division St. and worked upstream until they reached a large cottonwood tree that had fallen and spanned the entire river. The majority of the five-person group's energy was spent on removing the squirrel bridge. Luckily, Steve from CWT brought along the power winch to assist the crew in extracting the beast at the Friends of Six Mile Creek's first cleanup of the year, and CWT's second of 2025. Also, thanks David for the great photos & video!

The next time CWT will be working with the Friends of Six Mile Creek is on May 17. They will again be meeting at the Castle Creek Conservancy and working downriver.

Capital Water Trails will be busy again next Saturday (April 12) with another workday, this time on Starkweather Creek in Madison. Meet at the Olbrich Park Boat Launch (3401 Atwood Ave.) at 9am. The cleanup will end at approximately 1pm.

Capitol Water Trails kicked off their cleanup season on March 22 on land near the dam in Marshall. CWT & Steve Falter joined up with the Maunesha River Allance for a successful three-hour workday. Nine volunteers worked on several projects, including more cutting & bucking wood by the walking path, cutting & spraying new growth on the mounds, and prepping & seeding wildflowers on a 1,000 square foot plot on the upper portion of the land. Although the overall project is far from complete, it was nice to start the year with a productive workday to get our cleanup groove back on.

Since CWT & the MRA since started this project in Marshall on March 26, 2022, the two volunteer organizations have spent 419 hours on 17 workdays. The next scheduled workday on the land isn't until November 15, but more than likely last minute workdays will take place by the dam.

Capitol Water Trails has a weekend off before their next cleanup on April 5 on Six Mile Creek in collaboration with the Friends of Six Mile Creek. Meet at Castle Creek Conservancy (900 S. Division Street) in Waunakee at 9am.
