Happy Pollinator Appreciation Week!

At the Wisconsin Academy, we're taking this time to appreciate the pollinators that quietly sustain the ecosystems that sustain us. Caring for the natural world is something many of us share. Outdoor spaces for hiking, kayaking, birding, fishing, and simply being present in nature are part of a common thread that connects us across different backgrounds.

This sense of stewardship is central to our mission, deepening our relationship with the natural world and with one another.

Take a moment to appreciate your local pollinators today.

Your support helps make space for stories that matter.

Across Wisconsin, people define home in many different, but often similar, ways. Through our Finding Home story collection initiative, the Wisconsin Academy uplifts voices, experiences, and stories that remind us of our shared humanity.

Today, hear what home means to Montre Moore, the Membership Engagement and Outreach Director of the Midwest Building Decarbonization Coalition.

This Pride Month, we're celebrating LGBTQ+ voices and perspectives from across Wisconsin.

Today, we're highlighting "Notes Toward a Q***r Physics," the bonus poem from 2021 second place WP&I writing contest winner David Southward.

Through poetry, writers help us see the world and ourselves in new ways. We believe that diverse perspectives are necessary to strengthen our communities and connections with one another.

Today we honor Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas finally learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

As we reflect on this history, we want to highlight Juneteenth Day 1996: Freedom, a hand-printed artist's book created by Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. while he was an MFA student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Using letterpress printing, Kennedy's work celebrates Black history, community, and liberation.

At the Wisconsin Academy, we believe that understanding our history is essential to creating a more just and connected future.

Do you know where your clothes came from?

In a previous Wisconsin People & Ideas article, "Smitten with Linen," Letters and Communications Director Jessica Becker explores Wisconsin's flax fiber revival and the growing movement to create clothing that is durable and completely biodegradable.

Much like the farm-to-table and local food movements that have helped people reconnect with where their food comes from, Midwest Linen Revival is helping people reconnect with the origins of their clothing. The process of growing flax, processing fiber, and making linen locally helps deepen our understanding of the materials we wear every day.

Read the full story below and check out the upcoming Midwest Linen Revival events in Madison this month!
