Thank you to all who came and shared at last Sunday’s open mic.

This last weekend we lost another giant, a humble force, a lover, a mentor, a friend.

JVNP meant so much to Cydney. From when she met John in Chicago to being a First Waver Scholar to becoming a mentor and Associate Director.

We will never be able to measure Cydney’s impact. Only very rarely in this world do we get someone like Cydney. Someone like John.

The open mic is like the best place in the world. Both John and Cydney knew that. Here between the walls of this stage, the spotlight like a halo on our heads, the mic like an altar, there are no limits to our desire

Everyone believes me on this stage. Everyone is alive on this stage. Everyone is breathing on this stage

For them, we write and create the hardest we can, we remember the rhythm of our ancestors. We carry their torch and light the rest of the world with their embers. We hold each other between these lights.

We love you Cydney

We love you John

Heyyy new followers 👀 Allow us to reintroduce ourselves:

The JVN Project is a nonprofit hip-hop collective, dedicated to utilizing all elements of hip-hop to uplift and empower community. We are inspired by the legacy of John Vietnam Nguyên: Emcee, poet, rapper, dancer, hip-hop genius.

This past weekend we celebrated JVN Day: Raise the Bar, a weekend-long hip-hop festival that was open to the community and 100% free.

We had poetry, songwriting, dance & knowledge workshops, we held our first ever emcee olympics, we came thru with the community graffiti mural, and we ended with an iconic concert featuring as our headliner.

If you’re new here, welcome. If you showed out this weekend, thank you for celebrating with us.

One Love 🦋

For our last artist highlight we wanted to shout out Rodrigo Carapia, our muralist for JVN Day 2023!

Every year for JVN Day, we create a community mural in collaboration with an artist at Elements in The Park. We can’t wait to see what genius Rodrigo puts together this year ✨

Catch the mural in progress on Sunday at Elements in The Park 💥

Rodrigo Carapia is a Madison based artist and muralist originally from México City. His work has been featured in various places in Madison, notably The Red Gym, Dane County Juvenile Detention Center, and The Overture Center. Tone Madison is quoted saying “His experiences as an immigrant, who comes from a vulnerable neighborhood in Mexico City, drove him to help incarcerated youth and others through his art.”
