The 6th Wisconsin Infantry, a regiment in the famed Iron Brigade, earned a well-deserved reputation for its fighting prowess. In a letter to his wife written after the Battle of the Wilderness, Lt. Col. Rufus R. Dawes wrote how thankful he was to have remained uninjured. “Through God’s blessing I am yet alive, and beside the fearful tax upon my energies, mental and physical, have nothing to complain of and everything to be thankful for. For six long days we have been under the deadly musketry,” Dawes explained. The brigade’s losses, which included 724 men killed, wounded, or captured provides ample evidence of why Dawes felt grateful.
