It's easy to think of elections in terms of candidates and campaigns. But elections are about people: neighbors working together in communities across Wisconsin.

In this thoughtful op-ed in the Wisconsin State Journal, Pastor Andy Twiton, a member of the LOPPW Policy Council and pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madison, reflects on elections through the lens of neighborliness.

"On Election Day, the people who check our names, hand out ballots and watch over the voting machines are our neighbors... These poll workers represent a variety of political perspectives and life experiences, and they are sworn to serve us all," he writes.

"We the people may need to be the adults in the room this election season... Perhaps we can start by learning the name of our municipal clerk, or by waving to our neighbors as we all go to cast our ballots."

Systemic barriers can make it difficult for people with disabilities to vote. Some polling places are not as accessible as they need to be, information might not be accessible, and lack of accessible transportation can make it hard to get to the polls.

This is , and the theme this year is "Be an Accessible Democracy Defender."

Everyone has a role to play in making our elections accessible - from helping a friend make a plan to vote to checking if a polling place is accessible and from sharing information about accessible voting to reporting any accessibility barriers you see.
