Our next featured home is the Shelton Residence:

Discover the charm of 605 Jefferson St. in historic Madison, Indiana — a beautiful location surrounded by timeless character, small-town charm, and the rich history of one of Indiana’s most picturesque river communities. This property offers an inviting blend of location and character, while showcasing a piece of Madison’s historic atmosphere.

This home boasts a fascinating connection to the city’s rich 19th-century medical history. The home was built in the early 1910s by Dr. George Elmer Denny, right next door to his medical practice. Dr. Denny returned to Madison in 1901 and started his own private hospital at 601 Jefferson St - the Dr. Denny’s Sanatorium. Folklore claims that there was a tunnel that connected the sanatorium & home… though no tunnel has been located, it remains a fun mystery to be solved!

Today, 605 Jefferson St. represents more than an historic residence—it is a piece of Madison’s story, connecting the city’s 19th-century growth, its medical history, and its long-standing commitment to preserving its architectural heritage. Its connection to Dr. Denny and its location within one of Indiana’s most significant historic districts give the property a distinctive sense of place and character.

Our next featured home is the Godward House 🏡

This remarkable Gabled Italianate residence was constructed between 1874-1882. Over the years, the home evolved with additions completed in the 1940s and 1950s, reflecting its continued adaptation to changing needs while maintaining its historic character.

At one time, the structure was divided into six small apartments, yet many of its original architectural features survived. Today, visitors can still appreciate the home’s historic baseboards, windows, doors, and hardwood floors, all of which provide a tangible connection to its nineteenth-century origins.
