DAMA WI A non-profit mural program devoted to using transformative power of art to visually beautify communities & engage members of neighborhoods in the process.

DAMA is a mural program whose purpose is to engage community members throughout Dane County in the mural making process. Together, we are creating art for public display of the highest merit. Knowing that our impact will extend beyond those who actively participate in the creation of murals, DAMA recruits participants through multi-channeled community networks and positively affects the quality of

life for Dane County residents. Our work builds upon dozens of existing collaborations - while continually creating new ones - both local and national. Through DAMA, community artists are training in the process of creating community murals. They learn to use art as an educational tool to make a difference in the lives of Dane County communities with an emphasis on working with at-risk youth. DAMA engages communities and youth in all aspects of mural making - providing opportunities to experience success through organized, hands-on, hard work. Our goal is to address disparities by working within urban and rural communities that have limitations to arts programs. Through extensive outreach to and partnership with those whose grassroots efforts are building community, we are using the arts as the tool to address urban decay, community engagement and youth self-affirmation: beauty, goodness, and truth drive our work. DAMA is dedicated to utilizing the transformative power of art to visually beautify communities and engage members of neighborhoods in the process. DAMA artists benefit from the increased opportunity for paid work as community artists. Community participants benefit from the ownership of the public art in which they are fully a part. Youth benefit by working alongside skilled trained artists who understand that deliberate practice leads to success. Through their hard work, youth benefit from the artist mentor relationships created, and learn job skills.

At DAMA’s Mobile Art Day, spending time with these talented students was a powerful reminder of how art and music can bring people together and build community. When creativity and collaboration meet, something special happens.

Our Mobile Art Studio is all about making art accessible—bringing hands-on art experiences directly to schools and neighborhoods. This means you’ll be seeing more of DAMA’s artists out in the community this summer, using art as an alternative path to building relationships, strengthening community bonds, and supporting collective healing.

The theme of this mural, “Finding Belonging Through Music,” reflects our belief that creative expression can help everyone feel they have a place. With each brushstroke and note, we’re not just making art—we’re building connections, fostering understanding, and helping our neighborhoods heal and grow together.

We’re grateful for the support of the Community Reinvestment Fund and the state’s violence prevention grant, which make it possible for us to keep showing up, inspiring, and creating alongside our neighbors.

**Apply Now: DAMA Youth Apprenticeship Program!**
Are you passionate about art? Do you want to make a difference in your community and build real-world skills this summer? Join DAMA's Youth Apprenticeship Program!
We’re looking for creative, motivated youth (ages 14–17) in Madison, Verona, Monona, Sun Prairie, and surrounding areas to take part in a unique summer experience. As a DAMA Apprentice, you’ll work side-by-side with professional artists, learn mural design and painting techniques, and help create public art that inspires and heals.
What’s in it for you?
- Hands-on training in art and mural making
- Leadership and teamwork experience
- Guidance from professional artists and mentors
- A $15 per hour for your participation
- The chance to give back to your community
No previous art experience is required—just a willingness to learn and a desire to be part of something bigger. Work permit required.
