The reason we celebrate is because of the importance of the in Ukrainian culture. Viktoriya Hrytsyk Sabchyshyn was our special guest at our Vyshyvanka Day celebration and shared examples from of her collection of vyshyvanky - some that are 150 years old - and explained the patterns, techniques, and colors that represent different regions of Ukraine. As she explained, a vyshyvanka could be given for a wedding and worn throughout a person’s life, each stitch loving added to represent protection, health, and their personal story. She walked through how the shirts are made, thread treated, stitches done, and sleeves mirrored. Most importantly, Viktoriya talked about how the vyshyvanka has survived wars, genocides, and bans making it an act of defiance to wear a vyshyvanka.

We cannot thank Viktoriya enough for making our Vyshyvanka Day celebration so incredible - you have inspired many of us to start learning embroidery… or at least researching the patterns on our vyshyvanky!

We also loved hearing the stories of your vyshyvanky and rushnyky. Do you have a family heirloom passed down from a grandparent? Did you stitch your own vyshyvanka? Were you gifted your rushnyk for your wedding? Share your story here!

The Hopak was originally danced by Cossacks in Zaporizhzhia, and the dance known for its jumps, spins, and feats of strength, spread across the country to become Ukraine’s national dance. Yesterday the Dnipro Ukrainian Dance Ensemble made one of the most difficult dances in the world look effortless and showed us why the Hopak is a symbol of Ukraine. With every blindingly fast turn, impossibly high jump, and Hopak kicks that only the strongest can do, the Dnipro dancers reminded us of Ukraine’s perseverance, strength, and determination. This was the first time the Hopak was performed on stage in Madison and the Dnipro dancers did the Hopak’s Cossack heritage proud!
