Combat Blindness International is dedicated to alleviating preventable blindness around the world.

After spending years traveling throughout India, Thailand, Indonesia, and Kenya, Dr. Suresh Chandra realized many of the problems with blindness in these countries could be cured with a simple 20-minute cataract surgery at a cost of only $25.

Last month, Reena Chandra had the opportunity to speak at the International Women's Day Celebration held by the Women's Forum, part of the Indian Association of Naples in Florida. There, she shared the work of Combat Blindness International and the impact of expanding access to eye care around the world, as well as empowering women through training and education.

It was an inspiring gathering filled with meaningful conversations, new connections, and incredible women who are passionate about making a difference.

Shankrappa, 59, from Nalwadi Village, faced immense challenges after losing his leg nearly two decades ago. Recently, his vision began to fade, making daily life even more difficult.

Through a free eye camp by Jayapriya Hospital, he was diagnosed with a cataract and received sight-restoring surgery supported by Combat Blindness International.

Today, Shankrappa can see clearly again. While life is still not easy, his renewed vision has brought confidence, independence, and hope.

This is the impact of access to care.

Women account for 64% of the world's blindness.

Too often, women's health concerns are overlooked, and vision is no exception. Women account for 64% of the world's blindness, yet this disparity rarely makes headlines. April is Women's Eye Health and Safety Month. Access to care, early screenings, and awareness can save a woman's sight and her independence.

At Combat Blindness International, we are working to close this gap by training women as eye care providers, expanding access to screenings, and bringing care directly to communities through programs like the Aadya Initiative.
