Job: Community Forest Coordinator

The Community Forest Coordinator develops and implements a new Madison-based urban forestry project aimed at growing tree canopy cover on the city’s south side through outreach, strategic planning, and tree planting and maintenance. The position will either assist or directly coordinate all aspects of the project. This includes organizing project partners, developing planting projects, and conceiving and implementing communications. Patience, persistence, and dedication to our urban natural environment are required.
The Urban Tree Alliance is a local not-for-profit focused on understanding and growing the local urban forest canopy. Through public, not-for-profit, and private partnerships, we plan and implement community forest projects that empower community groups and property owners without arboricultural resources. We work with partners as diverse as local municipalities and school districts, multi-family housing providers, preschools, churches, the Truax National Guard, East Madison Little League, and environmental groups. Through these collaborative efforts, we have planted more than 1,300 trees over the past 9 years and provided arboricultural planning services to multiple partner organizations.
This new position will work in partnership with Wisconsin EcoLatinos, Operation Fresh Start, and the Capitol Area Regional Planning Commission (CARPC).
Compensation and Benefits:
$33,600/yr (including health stipend)- This is a part-time, salaried position with an expectation of approximately 20hrs/wk. with seasonal variations. Work schedules are planned and coordinated, but flexible. The Coordinator should be able and willing to work occasional evenings, weekends, and extended hours when needed. Generous paid time off.
This is a grant funded position with 16 months of funding intact. We’ve conceived this program as a 4-year endeavor and are currently developing funding for the remaining project period.
Skills and Experience
• 1-3 Years progressive work experience in natural resources, urban planning, landscape architecture, arboriculture, or other closely related field. Internships possible as work experience.
• Demonstrated curiosity through educational pursuits.
• Demonstrated ability to complete multi-phased projects.
Essential Functions
The Coordinator will substantially contribute to all phases of project development and implementation, and will manage outreach and communication components.
In particular, the Coordinator will:
• Establish a project advisory group of residents, local organizations, and other stakeholders representing the South Side’s interests, to guide and support community outreach and engagement.
• Research local land policies, developments, and related plans in the project area.
• Develop, coordinate, and implement outreach plans through a project website, emails, phone calls, community meetings, social media outlets, newsletters, tree walks, and door-to-door visits. Coordinate with contracted digital media services.
• Engage South Side neighborhood associations, community groups and residents to raise awareness of our project and recruit volunteers and advocates.
• Communicate with residents and partner organizations via phone and email on tree planting projects and educational programming details and scheduling.
• Reach-out to community organizations, schools, business owners, residents, public agencies, and residents to develop and implement tree planting projects and educational programming.
• Shape a 4-year canopy development and maintenance strategy that reflects the South Side’s desires and arboricultural capacity.
• Implement the resulting strategy through community-based planting programs and events designed specifically for single-family housing, multi-family housing, schools, community groups, commercial districts, and transportation corridors.
Valued Skills (not all required)- map making, IT management, website design, project management, grant writing, arboriculture/horticulture, tree planting and maintenance, text editing, graphic design, English and Spanish communication skills, volunteer organization, interest in developing questions and pursuing ideas about our local trees and community.
This job can include varied physical demands from tree planting and maintenance to walking and lifting. Accommodations can be made based on capabilities.
