For the seventh year in a row the Camp Twin Lakes - Rutledge, Georgia, SPIN FOR KIDS RIDE was an increasingly growing success!!

Representing the counties of Barrow, Butts, Henry, Jones, Dekalb, Walton, Newton, Rockdale and Morgan, over 20 hams were QRV at four strategic rest stop locations throughout Morgan County as the first heat (100 Miles) kicked off precisely at 8:00 am from the START/FINISH LINE at the CTL Welcome Center.

Four more groups launched each hour until the 5 Mile segment was in the wind at 1 PM.

During this 15th Annual event, nearly 800 riders, both sponsored and not, were once again historically successful as the largest CTL fundraiser realized its goals early on.

Read Morgan Koon's "Thank You" card. We are all so very proud of the way this group comes together

Y’all...there’s a new ham in town...please welcome Keith J. Durham, KN4GCW, newly “minted” a little over two weeks ago. Keith holds a General Class ticket as the result of his exceptional enthusiasm for the hobby and service aspect of Ham Radio. His main objective is to become involved in ARES at the local level. He is employed by AT&T; is a member of their FirstNet Team; and a bunch of other good stuff I am sure he would like to discuss with you...

KN4GCW has agreed to “jump in” to the next activity, Spin For Kids, with both feet! He will certainly be getting his “feet wet”!!! Make sure you take a moment to introduce yourself to Keith and welcome him to Morgan County ARES, WR4MC.

Unless some among the WR4MC ARES group are willing to step forward, there will be no FD17 this year at Morgan County PSC/EOC site. Health issues prevent Bill Ronay, KM4LS, EC Morgan County, from organizing as he has for the past 6 years.

However, there is a selection of FD17 Pins, Hats, Shirts and Mugs (five each) for any of the group who may want them.

Contact Bill, KM4LS, accordingly.

ATTENTION: ALL MORGAN COUNTY ARES (WR4MC) AND AREA HAM RADIO OPERATORS...

IT’S ONCE AGAIN TIME FOR THE ANNUAL ARRL FIELD DAY, FD17.

AND YOU ARE ALL INVITED TO PARTICIPATE...

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Field Day is always the fourth full weekend of June, and as a 1F station, beginning at 1800 UTC (2 PM) Saturday and running through 0159 UTC Sunday. Field Day 2017 is June 24-25.

CONFIRM YOUR PARTICIPATION: These past two years have seen a renewed interest in the Morgan County ARES, WR4MC, program. You can tell by the number of individuals this email is being sent to that we have grown considerably. Please confirm your participation as soon as possible so we can plan the details for setting up at the EOC. Several have suggested we once again use the EOC Training Room as the station location. The basic purpose of Field Day is to demonstrate to the community how ARES, Emergency Communications, functions and its role during actual emergency and/or disaster conditions. Many operate in “Contest Mode” during Field Day. Whichever method you want to use...even throw in a bit of CW...we can demonstrate ARES to full compliment.

“1F” DESIGNATION: Due to the limitations of space and coax inside the EOC, WR4MC has been operated as 1F. However, there has been interest shown to go to 2F. If any among the group would like to set up a station outside, pending appropriate approval, we could operate 2F with an additional station or stations.

Contact me as quickly as possible so we can plan accordingly.

Bill Ronay, KM4LS

Yes, "Ham Radio Operators Rock!", says Morgan Koon and Merrick Bonner, Spin For Kids Ride/Event Managers for Camp Twin Lakes - Rutledge, Georgia.

Twenty Amateur Radio Operators representing nine counties came together on Sunday, October 16, 2016 to provide flawless Emergency Communications for the fifth year in a row!

Nearly 750 riders launched in a combination of 6 heats, ranging from 5-100 miles, in an effort to meet and beat a goal to raise $500,000. In the process no riders were injured or had an accident resulting in damage other than to their pride and/or their bicycle!

I think we all agree with Morgan and Merrick. Also recognizing Emma who monitored and coordinated activities in the Net Control Room!

ATTENTION: ALL “CAMP TWIN LAKES – RUTLEDGE, SPIN FOR KIDS” EmComm OPERATORS and MORGAN COUNTY/CENTRAL GEORGIA AMATEUR RADIO OPS...

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

Just one week ago we were, about this time of day, winding down from what has turned out to be one of the most successful Spin For Kids Rides... About two-thirds of the goal had been met going into the ride. Phenomenal!!! This was also the most Ham Radio Operators gathered for this event. And the result was the SAFEST ride yet!

No one became lost; there were no injuries to or by riders; all made it back to the Start/Finish Line, some in record time! The new dual-band GS9 vertical antenna on a 30’ pole proved to be an excellent choice. Also, using the Monroe repeater with Covington’s machine as alternate turned out to be the best choice as well. At no time during the QRV was there a flutter, loss of signal or need to revert to the ‘backup’. All Rest Stop locations were able to communicate with NCS and each other with no problems encountered.

And the best part??? All of us have been invited to come back again NEXT YEAR to do it all again...a request I readily accepted on behalf of all of y’all, based on the enthusiasm, dedication and experience over the past FIVE YEARS. if it’s okay with each of you, I’ll just leave the roster “as-is” in the hopes we can count on each of you to return for SFK 2017.

The Rover vehicle, manned by Bill (KJ4EX), and the joint Motorcycle Marshals, Chris (KK4FNO) and Lori (KK4FNP), proved invaluable and were quite favorably commented upon by both riders and the Camp Twin Lakes/Spin For Kids folks. Way to go, y’all.

Over the past week, there have been some suggestions made and some plans to enhance next year’s SFK...

1: Rover (vehicle) and Marshal (motorcycle) to be re-designated...

2: SFK Banners at each Rest Stop to alert general public of event purpose and significance...
3: Creation of computer-based spreadsheet for NCS logging and possible real-time communication among all Rest Stop locations...

4:Installation of a permanent dual band antenna and mount on Welcome Center, Start/Finish building...

5: ...?

The latter suggestion will be taken on as a project by Wendell, WA4LHH. Have discussed costs and logistics with CTL Chief Operating Officer Dan Matthews and been informed the cost (approx $300) is acceptable and he would facilitate the installation with whomever was involved in the project.

Those among you who would like to join Wendell, please let him and me know so we can “make this happen”. Since CTL is a non-profit, we may want to consider funding this from within the group...

Please let me know if any among us have further suggestions to improve our part in the annual CTL Spin For Kids Ride...

AGAIN...THANK YOU ALL!!!

Bill

Congratulations to Rick Boulis, N4HU, for being honored for his contributions towards the Morgan County Cross-Country Trail and Running Team. In so doing, the recent home meet, Coach Erin Spinks said, “...named the Rick Boulis Invitational.” In the September 15, 2016 article (Sports, page B3), Coach Spinks continues, “We feel like naming the meet after him would help show how much he has contributed to the cross-country teams.”

ATTENTION: ALL CAMP TWIN LAKES, 2016 SPIN FOR KIDS RIDE, RUTLEDGE HAM RADIO EmComm OPERATORS

First...’thank you’ to each and every one of you who responded quickly and committed to an assignment for the 2016 Spin For Kids Ride, Rutledge. I have attached a PRELIMINARY roster, ICS 205, for your review. Please let me know of any corrections, possible changes, requests, etc any of you may have. Remember, this is a joint effort by members of several different ARES groups as well as non-affiliated hams from Central Georgia. You are urged to promote not only Ham Radio in general but to also use the opportunity/event to spotlight your individual organization(s).

Second, you will see there is good representation at each Rest Stop. There is at least one Morgan County ARES, WR4MC, member assigned. This should allow for more interaction among the volunteers and riders. Please look over those names and call signs and at your location and feel free to call each for any ideas and/or more specific details you may want to discuss. Also, on October 16 y’all will have a ‘reliable source’ for inquiries from the 900 “guests” who will be wheeling across Morgan County...

Third, especially those of you not assigned or looking for an opportunity to be a part of SFK 2016, please consider the importance of and extreme need for ROAD MARSHALS and ROVERS. You can see there several openings for each. Remember, these are the extra sets of “eyes and ears” watching these fast moving cyclists as they criss-cross Morgan County roads and may have the misfortune to become lost, have an accident or other emergency and be in need of IMMEDIATE RESPONSE!

On Friday, September 2, Bill Wilson, KJ4EX, and I...plus any of you who would like to join us...will be testing antennas and reception across Morgan County. I have purchased a Comet GS-9 Dual Band Antenna, 8.5 DB gain, and will be trying the smaller version used last year. Bill and a couple members of the Barrow CARS group will be there with a portable trailer setup. Wendell McNeal, WA4LHH, has a military surplus crank-up which we may also put into “play” (pun intended). If you would like to join us for this TEST exercise, please contact Bill at the number on the ICS 205 and we’ll plan accordingly. Meeting time is approximately 9 AM on that day...subject to change, of course.

Lastly...I extend the most gracious appreciation for our involvement over the past five years from the staff and administration of Camp Twin Lakes, especially the “Hometown” Rutledge, Georgia location. Your dedication and commitment have helped to make possible the Spin For Kids results of $900,000 being pledged and utilized in the CTL program. With continued and combined efforts, I am confident this goal will be met and greatly exceeded.

It was an honor to have been nominated and selected as the Camp Twin Lakes Volunteer of the Year, 2015. However, in my opinion, this award is definitely not mine. It belongs to each and every one of you...and I humbly accepted it on your behalf.

From the many phone conversations and over-the-air QSOs these past several months, the excitement, energy and ‘electricity’ for this event is growing exponentially.

As always, you are encouraged to contact me direct with any comments, questions and/or concerns.
