Today we recognize Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, Black history, and community. It is also a reminder that the work of equity, justice, healing, and safety for all families is ongoing.

At Canopy Center, we honor this day and stand with Black children, families, volunteers, and community members. Our commitment to creating a community where every child and family feels valued, supported, and safe extends beyond today and informs our work throughout the year.

We encourage our community to take time to learn, reflect, celebrate, and continue the work toward a more just future.

Welcome, Allyson! 💙

Allyson joins Canopy Center as a Family Support Volunteer, welcoming children and families into our space and providing childcare as needed.

She is a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (tag), where she is majoring in Psychology and Social Work. Outside of volunteering and school, Allyson enjoys playing video games, crafting, scrapbooking, reading, and watching movies.

“Since volunteering at Canopy Center, I feel more engaged and part of the community while supporting a cause I care deeply about.”

We’re grateful to have Allyson on the Canopy Center team!

18% of the children and youth served by our CASA program are impacted by homelessness - a challenge that can make an already difficult situation even more uncertain.

For children in foster care, stability matters. CASA volunteers help advocate for children's needs in court, at school, with caregivers, social workers, and other supports in their lives, helping ensure their voices are heard and their needs don't go unnoticed.

In the first quarter alone, CASA volunteers:

🏡 Engaged in 609 individual advocacy efforts
🏫 Had 76 contacts with schools
🚗 Traveled 5,429 miles to advocate for children in foster care

These numbers represent real time, care, and commitment from volunteers showing up for children when it matters most.

Thank you to our CASA volunteers for helping children feel seen, supported, and advocated for.

That’s a wrap on our first Playhouses for a Purpose! 🏡💙

The winners have been announced, and these incredible playhouses will soon be making their way to some very lucky kids’ backyards. Stay tuned, we can’t wait to share more photos and stories from their new homes!

We are so grateful to everyone who helped bring this fundraiser to life: the builders who donated their time and talents, our sponsors, ticket sellers, volunteers, and every person who purchased a raffle ticket.

Your support helps Canopy Center continue providing safety, advocacy, and healing for children and families in our community. Thank you for making this event such a success!

June is National Reunification Month. 🤝🏼

Through our Parent to Child program, Canopy Center supports families on their reunification journey. Recently, we supported a Mom who worked hard to maintain more than nine months of sobriety and was committed to building a healthy relationship with her child.

When her work schedule changed, we adjusted visit times so she could continue spending time with her child while maintaining employment and building stability for her family. Because we offer supervised visitation on evenings and weekends, families have opportunities to connect during times that fit their everyday lives. We also provide parent education and support to help caregivers build skills and strengthen relationships.

Just a few months later, she moved from supervised to unsupervised visits and took an important step closer to welcoming her child back home.

Every family's path is different, but research on foster care and permanency consistently finds that safe, meaningful relationships with family, culture and community are linked to improved emotional and behavioral outcomes.💙
