The Nature Conservancy in Mississippi

The Nature Conservancy in Mississippi TNC has played a key role in protecting and restoring some of our most iconic landscapes, totaling over 180,000 acres across the state.

Since 1965, The Nature Conservancy has been working to conserve lands and waters in Mississippi that have provided a sense of place and connection to our natural heritage for many generations. Together, we are making a measurable, lasting difference in Mississippi.

🌅 During TNC’s recent Southern Deltas Staff Retreat near Vicksburg, Miss., teams from across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama kicked off one morning with a bird walk led by our Southern Deltas Deputy Director Seth Blitch. With binoculars up and coffee in hand, the group spotted 35 species, including summer tanager, prothonotary warbler, indigo bunting, Baltimore oriole and Mississippi kite. Not a bad way to start the day!

Moments like these remind us why we do what we do to conserve the places that inspire wonder, connection, and a whole lot of bird nerd joy. 🕊️ Check out their list: https://nature.ly/4ed0b63

🌊 June 1 marks the start of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. 🌀 It’s a reminder of how powerful nature can be and how important it is to work with it.

Across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, The Nature Conservancy is restoring wetlands, rebuilding oyster reefs, protecting floodplain forests and strengthening coastal habitats that help buffer our communities from storms. 🌱🌳 These natural systems are some of our strongest allies in building long‑term climate resilience.

💚 And here’s the hopeful part: this work is making a difference. Every acre restored, every reef rebuilt, every partnership formed helps create safer, healthier places for people and wildlife. As we head into the season, we’re grateful for the communities, partners and supporters who make this progress possible. Together, we’re shaping a more resilient Gulf.

It's the stuff they write songs about. 🎶 This weekend brings a Blue Moon, the second full moon this month! 🌑 Also known as a "micromoon," the blue moon occurs at its farthest point from Earth, making it appear slightly smaller than average. Don't forget to take a minute to check it out.

Farming in the Mississippi Delta depends on groundwater. 🚜🌾More than 20,000 irrigation wells pump about 2 billion gallons of water each day from the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer. Over time, pumping has outpaced recharge, and water levels in the aquifer continue to decline. This decline threatens the long-term ability of the Delta to support agriculture, communities, and local industries.

To address this challenge, The Nature Conservancy is expanding an irrigation efficiency program in Mississippi that has already worked well for farmers in Arkansas. 💧Through this program, TNC will install at least 250 well timers on approximately 25,000 acres in the Mississippi Delta. ⏲️ Each producer may receive up to 10 well timers per year at no cost, helping make this technology accessible to a wide range of farms. Additional funding may allow the program to expand even further in the future.

We are excited to have Mississippi State University on board to help evaluate the program by using flow meter data to compare water use on fields with and without well timers. Delta FARM will provide producer outreach, technical assistance and field monitoring. The well timers will be provided by PumpTrakr and FieldPro Ag.

This project will help improve irrigation practices on private farmland while conserving a shared resource that the entire Delta depends on — the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer. Learn more: https://nature.ly/4vfYzzB

Can you say FIELD TRIP? One of our Nature Conservancy staff members visited the Splinter Hill Bog Preserve in Alabama at the perfect time – a month or so after a prescribed burn. 🔥 This preserve boasts an impressive 12 species of carnivorous plants, which require periodic fire to clear the area of brush, and to enable seed germination and the release of essential nutrients into the soil. 🌱 Learn more about this special TNC preserve: https://nature.ly/4dwvh8F
