The Mann Educational Opportunity Fund provides academic support, mentoring and an annual high school scholarship to small group of selected students to ensure successful high school graduation and a post secondary plan to be career and college ready. The Mann Educational Opportunity Fund is a scholarship which honors the late Bernard and Kathlyn Mann, long time Madison residents whose strong belie

f in education helped ensure the graduation of their five children from Madison Memorial High School and later from universities. The program's goal is to provide mentoring and educational tools primarily, but not exclusively, to students of color from the Madison Metropolitan School District who show potential for academic achievement, but face significant challenges in fulfilling their full potential.

On Feb. 24, 2025, Madison Schools - MMSD's Board of Education approved the renaming of Southside Elementary to Lori Mann Carey Elementary School. Lori, who is one of our program namesakes' children and early Mann Scholar program leader, was a beloved South Madisonian and fierce education advocate. This renaming is extremely significant as it not only honors her legacy, but is rooted in Southside community pride.

In honor of MLK Day, Mann Scholars joined the Youth Call to Service to learn, reflect, and take action. Workshops focused on emotional and physical well-being, building healthy communities, and the powerful role young people have played and continue to play. We were proud to uplift our incoming Mann Scholars and our senior Hezekiah, at the 42nd Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Recognition Breakfast hosted by the Urban League of Greater Madison.

It was a powerful morning honoring nearly 300 middle and high school students of color from across Dane County for their academic excellence, leadership, and commitment to service, including the next generation of Mann Scholars, who embody Dr. King’s vision through scholarship and community impact.

On December 13, our Mann Scholar seniors attended the annual scholarship gala hosted by the YP: Urban League of Greater Madison Young Professionals a dynamic group of leaders committed to empowering communities and changing lives through the Urban League Movement.

Our scholars had the opportunity to connect with and celebrate young Black professionals and community partners who are making a difference. Moments like these expand our scholars’ vision for their futures, reminding them that excellence, leadership, and success are within reach, especially when they see it modeled by those who look like them.

Thank you to YP for hosting our scholars and inspiring the next generation of leaders.

Achievement happens when scholars are supported and believed in. At Mann Fund, we value celebrating our scholars, even after graduation.

Meet Travona Jordan, a 2021 Mann Scholar alum and graduate of Vel Phillips Memorial High School, who went on to receive her bachelors and master of social work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Travona is currently a social worker who is passionate about supporting children and adolescents. Through her work, she hopes to create a safe, welcoming environment where the youth she works with feel secure and valued to share their experiences.

Your generosity helps open doors for our scholars, like Travona. Celebrate all of our scholars with us by making a donation early for : https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/support-mann-fund-this-giving-tuesday
