Lake Koshkonong Wetland Association The Lake Koshkonong Wetlands Association (LKWA); a non-profit organization focused on wetland conservation and education.

The Lake Koshkonong Wetland Association is a non-profit organization based on Lake Koshkonong in Rock, Jefferson, and Dane Counties. The focus of the group is to protect and preserve the wetlands around Lake Koshkonong. The group as a whole and its members individually have been involved in a wide variety of conservation projects including: habitat restoration, invasive species removal, controlled

burns, building and installing nest boxes for native birds, and various research initiatives involving wetlands and the wildlife that uses them. The group meets formally about half a dozen times a year with two or three meetings in the spring, two or three meetings in the fall, and a summer picnic usually hosted by one of our LKWA members in late July or early August. LKWA is sustained by membership dues and donations, however if you are interested in wetlands or just Wisconsin wildlife in general we invite you to get involved via this group page and/or attend a few of our meetings before deciding to join. Come see for yourself what a great educational resource we have here on Lake Koshkonong and network with other conservation-minded individuals in the Lake Koshkonong area!

Garlic mustard aphids were found at a state natural area feeding on the highly invasive plant.

Garlic mustard poses a major threat to natural landscapes where it takes over with aggressive seed production and releases chemicals into the soil that inhibit the growth of other plants.

Removing this plant from public land takes a lot of time and energy.

Current evidence shows that plants that are fed on by these aphids appear less healthy. There have been several reports in Wisconsin in recent years for what many are hopeful could be a promising new biocontrol.

If you see garlic mustard aphids, you can submit your sighting and view a map of where they’ve been found on the EDDMapS: https://www.eddmaps.org/distribution/viewmap.cfm?sub=88875

These large birds are becoming more common around Lake Koshkonong. Keep your eyes peeled! This woodpecker is hard to mistake for any other woodpecker as it is the size of a big crow and has a very distinctive call.

About a decade ago, the WIDNR started a bat roost monitoring effort to track the effect of the whitenose fungal disease that has been spreading across the country. The fungus started in the eastern states and continues to expand its area of effect. After an initial sharp decline in monitored bat roost populations, the 2024 Bat Roost Monitoring report shows a lot of optimism with stabilization and signs of population recovery the past couple of years. This is great news for everyone except mosquitoes and other pesky nighttime bugs!

See the report for all of the encouraging new data!

Amazing night footage of owl/eagle interaction. The owl's nighttime sensory advantage emboldens the smaller raptor to attack.
