September is National Guide Dog Month!!!

A guide dog is so much more than a companion. These specially trained dogs serve as the eyes of a person who is blind or visually impaired, helping their handler safely navigate everyday life with greater independence and confidence.

But when you see a guide dog working, it’s important to remember: they have a job to do. Even the friendliest-looking dog needs to stay focused on their handler.

A few guide dog etiquette reminders:

*Don’t pet, call to, whistle at or distract a working guide dog.
*Never grab the dog’s harness or leash. The handler is responsible for directing their dog.
*If you’d like to interact with the dog, always ask the handler first and respect their answer.
*If someone with a guide dog appears to need assistance, speak directly to the person, not the dog, and ask before helping.
*Keep your own pets under control and give working guide dog teams plenty of space.
*And remember, not all blindness is visible. Never assume someone doesn’t need a guide dog based on how they look or what they can see.

Behind every working guide dog are countless hours of training, dedicated puppy raisers, trainers, volunteers, donors, and most importantly, a partnership between a handler and a dog built on trust.

This National Guide Dog Month, help us spread awareness, respect working teams and celebrate the incredible dogs who help provide freedom, mobility, and independence every single day.

See the person. Respect the partnership. Admire the dog from a distance.

We have 3 German Shepherds looking for their forever home!

Gallant Hearts currently has three beautiful black female German Shepherds, approximately 3 months old, who are ready to find loving forever homes!

One of the puppies has an especially high activity level and would do best in a home without young children or older adults, simply because her energy and enthusiasm may be a little much for them. She would thrive with an active individual or family who can provide plenty of exercise, structure, training and attention.

Briar has been enjoying being back to school with her friends and working hard on all things training!

Every new environment, experience and skill is another step in preparing her for her future as a guide dog. We are so proud of Briar and the progress she continues to make!

A huge thank you to her puppy raiser for the time, love, patience and dedication that goes into helping Briar learn and grow. These everyday experiences make such a difference in her journey.

Gallant Hearts Guide Dog Center is currently looking for TWO puppy raisers for two wonderful German Shepherds in our program!

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to raise a future guide dog? Maybe you’ve considered becoming a puppy raiser but weren’t sure what’s involved, how long you keep the puppy, what expenses are covered or what’s expected of you.

THIS is your chance to ask!

Drop ANY and ALL questions you have in the comments! No question is too big or too small, and asking a question does not mean you’re committing to anything. We’d simply love the opportunity to tell you more about the program and what being a puppy raiser looks like.

You could play an incredibly important role in preparing a puppy who may one day provide independence, confidenceand companionship to someone who is blind.

What does it mean to be a Gallant Hearts puppy raiser?

Being a puppy raiser is an incredible opportunity to play an important part in preparing a future guide dog for someone who is visually impaired.

As a puppy raiser with Gallant Hearts, you will care for a puppy for approximately 12-18 months while helping them develop the skills, confidence and manners they will need. AND you can be located anywhere in the US to participate in this program.

Your responsibilities include:
-Housebreaking the puppy
-Socializing them by taking them to a variety of places and exposing them to new people and experiences
-Teaching good manners in the home and in public
-Attending obedience training and practicing those skills at home
-Providing consistency, patience, love and guidance as they grow

And you aren't doing it alone! Gallant Hearts pays for the puppy's expenses, including food, veterinary care, heartworm preventive, flea and tick control, and an obedience course for both the puppy and puppy raiser.

Once your puppy is housebroken, well-behaved, and ready to wear their "Guide Dog in Training" vest, you'll also have opportunities to take them along on errands, outings, and other experiences to help prepare them for their future work.

Gallant Hearts staff is there to support you and help with any training or behavioral challenges along the way.

Yes, giving the puppy back when the times comes can be bittersweet but you're giving that puppy the opportunity to provide something truly life changing: independence, confidence and companionship to a person who is blind.

We are looking for a puppy raiser for a very special German Shepherd pup!

We have a male GS that has already experienced living in a home and has received some socialization and work on being housebroken. He is incredibly cooperative, easy to handle, and has a wonderful temperament. We truly believe he would be an absolute joy to raise to continue on in the program.

We urgently need to find him a puppy raiser by mid-September so he can continue in the program.
