Why is Mike Paddling the Mississippi River for a 2nd Time?

Mike drifted a few years following his service in the war. While working in a foundry in Wisconsin Mike began to dream about paddling the Mississippi River, so he built a kayak (Folbot Kit) and set out early in the summer of 1973. He started the trip in Lake Ithasca, MN and finished the trip 10 weeks later in New Orleans. The trip provided Mike a new found confidence and he continued to hone his carpentry skills and made some other extended river trips including the Rio Grande.

In 1991 Mike went to Puerto Rico to help rebuild after Hurricane Hugo. On his return trip to the US Mike realized he wanted to attempt the same humanitarian effort in Vietnam. In 1992, with other American veterans, Mike returned to Vietnam for the first time since the war and helped build a medical clinic. During this experience he was inspired to commit the rest of his life to helping the people of Vietnam. In1993 MQI (Madison Quakers, Inc.), was formed with the help of a long-time Quaker (Joe Elder) in Madison, Wisconsin. MQI is a 501c3 non-profit and 100% of its funds go to help people in Vietnam. MQI’s work has included building schools, drilling wells, providing scholarships, providing bicycles, and a micro-loan program for struggling women.

This summer Mike will return to the Mississippi River, to once again, help the people of Vietnam.

One of the newer programs that MQI has been developing is providing forage grinding machines to farmers. The program is being administered by the Farmer's Union of Quang Ngai province with MQI Project Coordinator, Phan Van Do's guidance.
The foraging machines provide an efficient way for farmers to use agricultural byproducts to create nutritional feed for their livestock.
Since there are more farmers who need them than there are machines, the farmers who have received one are being asked to share their grinders with other farmers.
