With now a full week in the rearview mirror, here's a look at the moments that bookended all the serious stuff.

We kicked things off Milwaukee-style at Sunday's Welcome Fest: live music, the Famous Racing Sausages, and cheese. So much cheese. Because Wisconsin.

On Thursday, we closed the conference out in style. The 70s-themed reception had everything — bell bottoms, platform shoes, music and more than a few attendees who absolutely understood the assignment. 🕺🪩

If you were there, we hope you left with new connections, fresh ideas, and maybe a little disco (or polka!) in your step.

Some of the best conference takeaways come from hearing how others solved challenges similar to your own.

Today’s plenary, “Owning Our Future: State & Local Success Stories” was packed with practical ideas and success stories attendees can bring back to their own states and local communities.

A big thank you to our presenters: Kevin Shafer, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District; Phetmano Phannavong, AECOM (representing the Resilient Norfolk Coastal Storm Risk Management (CSRM) Project; and Kelli Higgins-Roche, NYS NFIP Coordinator. A special shout-out to our moderator Jana Henderson for fielding so many good questions from the audience.

Our next guest needs no introduction…

Today we honored ASFPM Co-founder Larry Larson for his 50 years of service to the association. Presented by ASFPM Executive Director Chad Berginnis, the plaque reads:

"As one of the six founding members of ASFPM, Larry became its guiding force and the ultimate steward leader, first as chair, then as executive director in 1982 — a position he held for 30 years, half of which were as a volunteer. With this selflessness, Larry grew the association to over 4,700 members and built an executive office staff of 16 by the time he passed the torch and moved to director emeritus in 2012. From 2012 to 2022, Larry continued to be an invaluable policy team member, advisor to ASFPM leaders and staff, and champion of ASFPM until his official retirement, where he once again...became a volunteer, still providing wise counsel, being a mentor and friend to all. Thank you, Larry, for an entire life dedicated to floodplain management, to ASFPM, for pushing all of us to be better and to be the change that we want to see in the world."

A little Flashback Friday to get you ready for …

In 1976, the sitcom Laverne & Shirley hit our TV screens from Milwaukee, WI — the same year a small group of dedicated flood professionals from the Midwest founded ASFPM with a big vision: reducing flood loss in the nation.

Fifty years later, that vision remains true. Because there’s nothing we won’t try. Never heard the word impossible.
