December 10th is Human Rights Day. Today, December 10th, is observed annually to commemorate the historic global pledge of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This historic document completely changed the framework we use to think about the unalienable rights as rights are all entitled to as human beings, rather than rights we enjoy as citizens of a particular country.
The idea of universal human rights is that they apply to all people, everywhere, no matter where we live. It affirms a framework that ties all people’s liberation together. A violation of human rights somewhere is a threat to human rights everywhere. The struggle for the realization of the rights of all people is interconnected, regardless of race, color, religion, s*x, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.
Here in Wisconsin, when we work toward a more equitable future where basic human rights are guaranteed for all, will have ripple effects. Today, on Human Rights Day, we ask ourselves in what ways we think globally, and continue to act locally as our daily actions define and embody our commitment to a universal human rights framework.
A better world is possible. It is up to us to create and build a better future if we come together and work to protect human rights, starting right in our communities and across the globe. Asserting human rights is the foundation for building a more just world.
Happy Human Rights Day ❤️
