Sustain Dane

Sustain Dane We inspire, connect and support people to accelerate sustainable actions for community wellbeing.

We believe everyone can be a changemaker, and all of our programs help individuals reach their full potential in making a difference. Think of us as connectors, facilitators, educators, organizers, sustainability entrepreneurs and networkers. We work with individuals in businesses, schools, and neighborhoods to inspire, connect, and support sustainability champions -- people taking action for a better future. Sustain Dane is a proud member of Community Shares of Wisconsin.

How do you talk about sustainability with someone who sees the issue differently than you do?

This snippet from our Accelerate Sustainability Workshop explores why listening first, finding common ground, and focusing on shared values can lead to more productive conversations. Whether it's protecting parks, keeping waterways clean, or creating a better future for the next generation, people often care about sustainability for different reasons.

As conversations around AI and data centers grow, so do questions about energy demand, grid stability, and community impact.

Paul Robbins, Dean at Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, UW-Madison, highlights the wide range of research happening across campus to better understand how these facilities interact with our energy systems—and what increasingly “lumpy” energy demand could mean for the communities sharing the same grid.

On Thursday, Sustain Dane teamed up with Madison Parks and Friends of Cherokee Marsh for an invasive species removal event at the South Unit of Cherokee Marsh. Spring is one of the best times to identify and remove invasive plants like Garlic Mustard, Dame’s Rocket, and Burdock before they spread further and crowd out native species. Plus, protecting our local ecosystems supports biodiversity, healthier habitats, and stronger parks for everyone to enjoy.

A big thank you to everyone who came out to lend a hand—including our friends from Sustain Dane members Madison College and Exact Sciences—for caring for this special natural area!

Are you looking to get involved, spend more time outdoors, and deepen your appreciation for Dane County’s parks? Check out volunteer opportunities through Madison Parks and join the effort to keep our green spaces thriving: https://www.cityofmadison.com/parks/volunteer.

Spencer represented Sustain Dane at the Madison Community Foundation’s recent Madison Gives event at Monona Terrace for an evening centered around the power of philanthropy and the many people working to strengthen our community. We’re grateful to Madison Community Foundation for providing funding support that helps Sustain Dane deepen and enhance our community connections.

The event brought together donors, nonprofit organizations, fundholders, and community members to celebrate the impact of giving across Madison. The program featured inspiring remarks from Dan Brown of Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison and retiring Madison Community Foundation Executive Director Bob Sorge, along with a performance by the Madison Symphony Orchestra and videos highlighting the work of Sustain Dane partner Operation Fresh Start.

It was a wonderful evening filled with connection, collaboration, and conversations with so many people dedicated to supporting important programs and creating positive change across our community. đź’š

A key priority in the 2019 Fitchburg Housing Plan is preserving and improving existing multi-family housing while maintaining affordability for residents. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is through sustainable, energy-efficient upgrades that lower utility costs and improve long-term housing quality.

The City of Fitchburg, WI - Government Sustainability Plan also outlines ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 33.4% and cut energy poverty by 50%. Programs like Efficiency Navigator directly support these goals by helping multi-family properties complete energy efficiency improvements that reduce emissions, decrease energy use, and create healthier, more comfortable living environments.

Beyond environmental impact, the program plays an important role in preserving naturally occurring affordable housing (NOAH). By lowering operating and energy costs, Efficiency Navigator helps property owners maintain affordability while supporting neighborhood stability and targeted investment in communities that benefit most.

In partnership with Elevate, we offer Efficiency Navigator help to small- to medium-sized multifamily housing become more efficient, affordable, and resilient while reducing operating costs for owners and energy cost burdens for residents. Across Dane County, something powerful is happening inside businesses of every size and sector. Sustainability is becoming a driver of innovation, employee engagement and long-term business success.

From energy efficiency upgrades to employee-led composting programs, organizations are discovering that when sustainability is embedded into everyday decision-making, it unlocks new ideas, saves money, strengthens teams and builds resilience for the future.

Coming off an engaging April Earth Month, it is clear to me that sustainability matters to our local businesses and is essential to long-term business success. It is essential to address rising costs and gasoline prices, shifting priorities, extreme weather events, talent attraction/retention and community well-being.

Sustainability is the practice of meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own. Increasingly, local Dane County businesses are recognizing that sustainability is a present-day opportunity they must take to innovate, adapt and lead.

We’ve all done some reading in the bathroom before… but probably not like this!

Last week Thursday, Spencer, Sonali, and Frankie attended the Learning Lavatories event at the new Madison Public Market—a creative collaboration between the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District, the Madison Public Market Foundation, the City of Madison, Wisconsin Government, and Art & Sons—ahead of it's grand opening on July 23.

These one-of-a-kind spaces use playful art and interactive design to spark curiosity about water, wastewater, and the systems that help protect public health and our environment. From the microbes that help clean wastewater to careers in the industry, proper chemical disposal, water systems, and even the impact of leaves on wastewater, every detail was designed to make learning fun and accessible. We also got a firsthand look at the rainwater capture system that will help flush toilets at the Market another example of sustainability in action.

It was nice to see our partners at the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District highlighting the importance of water stewardship and environmental education in such a creative, community-centered space. Through our work together in the Efficiency Navigator program, we’ve seen firsthand how education and small infrastructure improvements — like optimizing or replacing outdated water softeners — can help reduce salt pollution and protect our waterways.

This is such a creative and thoughtful way to connect the community with the important work happening behind the scenes every day.
