Badger Rock Middle School students culminating project of the year is creating board games! The Rooted Farm & Education team were one of the community partners invited to test out games and we were beyond impressed with the creativity, the detail and the thoughtful critiques of society they chose to explore through their games!

Come to our June End of School Year CommUnity Dinner this Friday June 5th where you can get a chance to play the games they created, too!

This Friday June 5th is our End-of-School-Year CommUnity Dinner, hope to see you!!

The theme of the year at Badger Rock Middle School is land, so this year students painted a mural with artist Paola Mayorga, a self-taught artist from Puebla, Mexico connected to that theme as part of our Earth Day partnership with Madison Gas and Electric. Paola will be at the dinner for the unveiling of the finished mural so come out to see it and learn more about her art!

Paola says her paintings are shaped by her culture, history, memories and dreams and that her work often explores nature, the human figure and cultural elements--rooted in her Mexican heritage with a magical touch...you can see this expressed in the gorgeous mural she co-created with our students.

It's the beginning of the season for the Badger Rock honeybees! We are getting suited up and checking out our hives this week with Badger Rock Middle School students in Rooted's Gardening & Culinary Arts classes!

We shared how bees can see in ultraviolet and the patterns they see on the flowers lead them right to where they can find the nectar. We saw the uncapped nectar in the hives, the capped nectar that has already been turned into honey, and the baby bees also called brood that look like little white grubs before they transform into adults!

1/3 of our crops depend on pollination to make food, so doing our part with the Badger Rock apiary and all the ways we support native bee populations!

Tune in Sunday for the next in our AAPI Heritage Month workshop series with Yasumi Hanabusa! Yasumi Hanabusa was in Madison to visit and perform, and joined us for both a virtual workshop and in person at our May CommUnity Dinner to share about Traditional Okinawan Dance! We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to see her perform and learn more about her culture through the art of dance!

Yasumi says:

"I live in Okinawa, Japan.
Okinawan traditional
Dance teacher.
I have been learning the Okinawan dance for about 17yrs…
Okinawa used to be an industrial own country.
We call “Ryukyu “
Ryukyu had a relationship with China and the Chinese government came to Ryukyu.
After they landed in Ryukyu.
Ryukyu government held welcome parties.
Some of the young royal members performed a celebration dance at the main castle.
That is how they started Okinawan traditional dance.
What is the difference between the mainland dance and Okinawan dance?
Okinawan dance had
Karate based movements.
Characteristic hair styles.
Kimonos are just beautiful."
So much gratitude for Junko and Yasumi for coming to share their art with us! See less
