Make Music Madison

Make Music Madison Make Music Madison is a free outdoor musical celebration that happens every June 21st Make Music Madison is part of Make Music Day.

Last year, over 1,000 cities around the world threw citywide music celebrations on June 21. It all started 38 years ago in France. In 1982, France’s Ministry of Culture dreamed up an idea for a new kind of musical holiday. They imagined a day where free, live music would be everywhere: street corners and parks, rooftops and gardens, store fronts and mountaintops. And, unlike a typical music festiv

al, anyone and everyone would be invited to join and play music, or host performances. The event would take place on the summer solstice, June 21, and would be called Fête De La Musique. (In French, the name means both “festival of music” and “make music!”)

Amazingly enough, this dream has come true. The Fête has turned into a true national holiday: France shuts down on the summer solstice and musicians take over. Almost 8% of the country (5 million people) have played an instrument or sung in public for the Fête de la Musique. Three decades later, the holiday has spread throughout the world and is now celebrated in more than 120 countries. In the U.S., the presenting sponsor is the NAMM Foundation.

It's time for our next, 2026 Make Music Madison featured artist - 🥳

We couldn't be more excited to have Faux Beaux back for . Keep an eye on the Make Music Madison website for the final artist lineup to find out where they will be performing, & check out their next performance at the Bur Oak on 5/22!

How did you get into music?

I think the four of us each have unique relationships with music comparatively. Ethan, our bassist, went to a performing arts high school and lives and breathes music. Similarly, Marquise has a performing arts degree in percussion and has been drumming since he was very little. Sam, our keyboardist/producer, has also been making music and playing a variety of instruments since he was young. On the other hand, I (Quentin) picked up guitar relatively late. I've loved lyrics and songwriting since day one, and I eventually picked up guitar because of that interest.

What genre do you consider your music, or how would you describe it?

Indie funk rock has been our favorite term so far. The four of us are generally inspired by old school blues/jazz playing, but we love a good groove and use a lot of contemporary rock and roll songwriting elements.

What are some of your greatest musical influences?

I've always felt a deep appreciation for the music from the alternative rock scene in the 90s/2000s. I take a lot of songwriting inspiration from people like John Frusciante with the RHCP, Jeff Buckley, The Strokes, Chris Cornell, and so on. Our extended, bluesy jam breaks also push us towards Phish territory. I'm always listening to new stuff for inspiration too, and I'd be silly not to mention some of our more modern influences like the Backseat Lovers, moondoggy, Ocean Alley, and flipturn.

Why do you participate in MMM?

On top of being a great chance to get our tunes heard by folks in the city, it's also a really cool event that showcases just how much awesome music is being made and performed in Madison.

Favorite Local Inspirations?

Yolk and Sapsucker are my personal favorite local crews (I can't pick one) but we also love Prairie Smoke, Deadset, Full Panic, and Cause and Control, just to name a few.
