How did you get into music?
I think the four of us each have unique relationships with music comparatively. Ethan, our bassist, went to a performing arts high school and lives and breathes music. Similarly, Marquise has a performing arts degree in percussion and has been drumming since he was very little. Sam, our keyboardist/producer, has also been making music and playing a variety of instruments since he was young. On the other hand, I (Quentin) picked up guitar relatively late. I've loved lyrics and songwriting since day one, and I eventually picked up guitar because of that interest.
What genre do you consider your music, or how would you describe it?
Indie funk rock has been our favorite term so far. The four of us are generally inspired by old school blues/jazz playing, but we love a good groove and use a lot of contemporary rock and roll songwriting elements.
What are some of your greatest musical influences?
I've always felt a deep appreciation for the music from the alternative rock scene in the 90s/2000s. I take a lot of songwriting inspiration from people like John Frusciante with the RHCP, Jeff Buckley, The Strokes, Chris Cornell, and so on. Our extended, bluesy jam breaks also push us towards Phish territory. I'm always listening to new stuff for inspiration too, and I'd be silly not to mention some of our more modern influences like the Backseat Lovers, moondoggy, Ocean Alley, and flipturn.
Why do you participate in MMM?
On top of being a great chance to get our tunes heard by folks in the city, it's also a really cool event that showcases just how much awesome music is being made and performed in Madison.
Favorite Local Inspirations?
Yolk and Sapsucker are my personal favorite local crews (I can't pick one) but we also love Prairie Smoke, Deadset, Full Panic, and Cause and Control, just to name a few.
