It is with a heavy heart that WADEM shares news of the passing of Dr. Marvin Birnbaum last month at the age of 90. Dr. Birnbaum was a pioneer and visionary who helped shape the foundation of modern prehospital care and contributed to the development of disaster medicine.

Dr. Birnbaum was instrumental in launching Madison, Wisconsin’s paramedic program in 1972, only the third city in the United States to have one at the time. He was well known in the medical community in Madison and throughout the University of Wisconsin, serving for over 30 years as the Medical Director for the Madison Fire Department, as Medical Director of the Emergency Education Center and the Paramedic Training Program, both part of the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. He also worked as Medical Director of EMS for the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Wisconsin.

Marv, as he was often known within the international disaster medicine community, dedicated decades of service to building the science of disaster medicine and to WADEM, serving on the Board of Directors, as President, Board Chair, and, for more than 23 years, as the Editor-in-Chief of Prehospital and Disaster Medicine (PDM). He was often invited to speak at conferences and workshops worldwide and published more than 200 papers in the peer-reviewed literature, including co-authoring/co-editing ”Health Disaster Management: Guidelines for Evaluation and Research in the Utstein Style.”

Perhaps most significantly, he was a comforting colleague, easily approachable, with a great sense of humor. An extraordinary intellect, shared with humility, was Dr. Birnbaum’s hallmark. His legacy and impact will not be forgotten.

Please join us in keeping Dr. Birnbaum's family and loved ones in your thoughts.
