Waubesa Beach Neighborhood
RE: Leaf Collection Site Pilot Program
Hello neighbors,
With the beauty of the fall colors comes the challenge of collecting leaves and keeping them from polluting our waterways. Thus, we are offering you some help with leaf collection.
Did you know?
Phosphorus is the greatest contributor to algae growth in the lake.
• When leaves break-down they create a phosphorus rich tea that washes into the lake with run off. It only takes 1 pound of phosphorus to produce 500 pounds of algae.
• Phosphorus settles to the lake bottom and continues to feed algae blooms for years.
Burning leaves has negative impacts to the environment, as well as safety and health concerns.
• Ash from burnt leaves contains highly concentrated amounts of phosphorus that can be deposited in the lake during run off.
• Burning leaves contributes to air pollution; toxic gases, microscopic particles and dust in the smoke cause eye, nose, throat, and lung irritation, as well as inducing asthma attacks.
• Unattended or uncontrolled burning leaf piles may lead to wild grass and structural fires.
• Smoldering fires may be home intrusive and a nuisance to neighbors.
What can I do?
In a collaborative effort, the Waubesa Beach Neighborhood Association, Town of Dunn, Lake Waubesa Conservation Association (LWCA) and Dane County Parks have formulated a pilot program for a centralized leaf collection for the Waubesa Beach Neighborhood beginning Nov. 1st through Nov 26th .
The collection site will be a fenced in area at the northwest side of the Goodland Park parking lot.
Site Rules:
• Leaves only – No brush, weeds, tree limbs, rocks, animal waste or any other non-leaf material
• No bags. Leaf bags must be emptied and removed from site.
• Fill collection site from left to right.
• Cover deposited leaves with provided tarp to prevent water and creating tea.
There is no cost to you for participating in this pilot program.
We thank you for your support and participation in this pilot program. LWCA
