Our statement on the current anti-trans legislation efforts.
Right now, the rights of transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming Wisconsites are under constant attack by Republican legislators in what experts call the most gerrymandered legislature in history. Republicans continue to erode the civil liberties and rights to privacy and medical self-determination of Wisconsinites under the guise of protecting us from individuals who, in reality, are many times more likely to be the victims of physical and sexual violence than the perpetrators.
Recent legislation attacking the rights of trans* individuals includes:
Assembly Bill 465 and Senate Bill 480, Senate Bill 377, Assembly Bill 447, and Senate Bill 438. All of which are published by lobbying groups and individuals who do not live in this state or care for its citizens. As pointed out in hearings last week, not a single medical, psychiatric, or social service association stands by these bills. Many doctors, social workers, and other professionals with decades of experience with Wisconsin youths showed up to testify against these bills for endangering the safety and lives of our children. As seen in other places, these bills also endanger cisgender people who are victimized by misplaced transphobic attacks and harassment. The safety of LGBT+ youths is already adequately protected by the medical standards in place at all levels: WPATH, insurance, and psychiatric. These bills limit the freedoms of all families in our state to receive medical care, benefit socially and physically from sports, and to be free from discrimination based on common genetic, physical, and/or biological anomalies.
The Trans Resistance Action Committee unequivocally condemns these bills for being illogical, hateful, and a waste of Wisconsin citizens’ time. While Republicans showboat for their Super PAC donors and special interest groups, their actions in the legislature continue to cause material harm to trans* Wisconsinites. Join TRAC in standing against these bills today. Our next meeting is Saturday, October 28th at 1pm in room 104 at the Madison Central Library. Masks required!
