👑Sisters in Sashes👑

Many of our girls are shining in crowns this summer while sharing their passion for agriculture. Featuring Elizabeth Colwell, who is proudly serving as the Senior WI Make it With Wool Ambassador. This past January, Elizabeth had the opportunity to represent Wisconsin at the national competition.

Congratulations to Elizabeth on this wonderful accomplishment! We wish her the very best as she continues to shine and proudly represent Wisconsin.

This summer, a few AWA sisters took their passion for agriculture across the globe through study abroad programs!

Name: Gina Frisle
Year in school: Senior
Major: Dairy Science
Program/University: Dairy Internship at Perrotis College (6 week program)

Why did you choose to study abroad: "I chose to study abroad because I wanted to take myself out of my comfort zone and gain a better understanding of international agriculture. I also found that six weeks was long enough to immerse myself in the culture while also not being too long."

Favorite part of the trip: "My favorite part of the trip was the four day sailing trip through the Mamma Mia islands. This was a trip offered through the school along with many other opportunities.

How was this experience beneficial: "The program that I chose was focused on dairy in Greece and I worked through three different rotations, including the dairy farm, dairy processing facility, and their feed mill. This was beneficial because I was able to see parts of dairy farming that I do not normally see, the dairy processing and feed mill, and learn more about dairy farming in other countries."

Why would you recommend: "I would 100% recommend someone to study abroad in general, but also to do this study abroad if you are interested in dairy or large animals in general. Overall, I had an amazing time and the people I met truly made this experience so much more memorable."

We love seeing our members explore, learn, and grow in new places. 💛✈

Name: Mattea Eleshio
Year in school: Sophomore
Major: Animal and Veterinary Biosciences
Program/University: Panama Wildlife Medicine

Why did you choose to study abroad: "I chose to study abroad so I could experience clinical work in another country, which allowed me to see how cultural differences impacted veterinary medicine. Studying abroad also gave me the opportunity to work with wildlife and exotic animals I wouldn’t have the opportunity to otherwise!"

Favorite part of the trip: "I enjoyed working with wildlife, including sloths, monkeys, and anteaters, the most."

How was this experience beneficial: "Studying abroad allowed me to experience different fields of veterinary medicine, which helps me to see what species I want to focus on in the future! It also gave me more clinical experience and hours working with veterinarians."

Why would you recommend: "I would absolutely recommend studying abroad! It’s a great opportunity to explore different cultures and see the world, all while furthering your career."

Our sisters are making an impact all summer long through internships and experiences that are shaping their future careers. Follow along as we share their stories and celebrate the incredible work they’re doing for the upcoming months.

Name: Emily Sydow
Year in School: Junior
Major: Agricultural and Applied Economics with a certificate in Public Policy

Company working for: Wisconsin DNR and DATCP
Official title: Research Intern

Day to day tasks: “Attend meetings with Wisconsin DNR and DATCP to discuss ongoing survey results. In addition to organizing data using excel and completing economic analysis evaluating cost incentives.”

What you hope to learn: “I hope to continue learning about policy development and how research shapes legislation.”

Favorite part so far: “My favorite part has been learning shortcuts to excel and gaining proficiency in data entry.”

Emily's dedication to research and her eagerness to develop new analytical skills are laying a strong foundation for her future career. We're proud of all she's accomplished this summer and wish her the very best as she continues making an impact in agricultural policy and economics! 📊🌾

Name: Kiara Konyn
Year in School: Sophomore
Major: Dairy & Food Animal Management

Company working for: Royal Farms Dairy
Official title: Dairy Intern

Day to day tasks: “Rotated through different departments each week, including reproduction, maternity, hospital, nutrition, and heifer care, learning the day to day responsibilities of each area and working alongside the employees.”

What you hope to learn: “l was excited for the opportunity to work on a much larger scale dairy than my family’s farm back home while continuing to practice and improve my skills especially in breeding and learning from experienced employees.”

Favorite part so far: “My favorite part has been working in maternity and with the breeding crew. Especially getting to breed and ultrasound cows and heifers independently.”

Kiara is originally from California and is spending her summer in Kansas! This opportunity is allowing her to embrace new experiences and grow her passion within the dairy industry. Keep working towards your goals and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for you. 🐄💛

Name: Summer Hammann
Year in School: Junior
Major: Dairy Science with a certificate in Science Communication and Agricultural Business Management

Company working for: Alfalawn Farm
Official title: Herdsman Intern

Day to day tasks: “Helping monitor the health of cows and calves, assisting with treatments using medications and IVs, helping with pregnancy checks, giving shots as part of the Double Ovsynch breeding protocol, and giving vaccines to cows at dry-off. I have also been learning and working on artificial insemination, working with the farm’s show heifers, and shadowing the herdsman to better understand the day-to-day management decisions that keep a dairy operation running successfully.”

What you hope to learn: “Using my skills from school and prior farming experience and learning how to apply them to a larger dairy while also learning more about how to manage a well run dairy.”

Favorite part so far: “Being able to get more repetition on treating and breeding cows while also learning more about the why behind the protocols.”

Summer is extremely passionate about working in the dairy industry and is always willing to take on new challenges. She is expanding her knowledge of herd management and hoping to take those skills into her future career! 🐮🤍
